Corrib Operations

If someone with better knowledge of Garda Water Unit could add other notable operations it would balance out this article. Also why is Britain mentioned in this as regards practices? Offhand, I can't think of any similar sustained operations always in the same place, and certainly none that involved so many of the unit at the same time. Not to mention two Navy ships! Britain is Ireland's closest neighbour, and a pretty big one. People might not see the relevance if you compare them to the tactics of the East Timorese police water unit.

I have. What I wrote still stands; they have never been involved in a sustained operation of the scale referred to in the paragraph you blanked, and in the Irish Times article, the link to which you also deleted. I don't believe you were right to do that, nor that either violated WP:UNDUE. Plus, they'll have to do it all over again in the spring when Shell will try for the fourth time to lay the pipe.

You haven't addressed any of the points I made above. The article doesn't mention any other operations because they're smaller and scattered all over the place. It's not just that it happened, unprecedented as it was; everyone involved knows something similar is going to happen all over again in a few months.

It doesn't really matter if it was covered in the Irish Times (I imagine a load of operations are - surely they were involved in the drug recovery off the Cork coast too? I imagine that would've been huge), it simply isn't notable enough for inclusion. Thanks! Fin©™ 19:24, 31 December 2008 (UTC)

My argument is not just that the Mayo operation is unusually big, but also that it is sustained over a long period. The WU has been down there since at least the summer of '07. They were based in Erris for weeks this summer, possibly one of their longest sojourns ever away from base. I'm pretty sure the bulk of the WU RIBs were there too, because they still needed to borrow some of the Navy ones. They were so stretched that when a section of the Shell to Sea Fleet visited the Solitaire (breaking some law by boarding her, apparently) and its supply ships at Killybegs, there was no WU to be seen. All in Mayo. Like I say, unprecedented. I'm happy to read what you write, 9x5; you don't need to thank me.

I've transferred the section on Corrib Operations to Policing the corrib gas protests where it is more relevant. I believe this is a better compromise as it doesn't involve the loss of any info.
