Name edit

Would it be better to drop the word Village from the title? Keith D (talk) 19:51, 11 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Since it calls itself Galley Common Village on its website, I'm thinking no. —C.Fred (talk) 21:34, 11 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
Hello. I was rather surprised by the name of this article (which is why I decided to take a look in the Talk section to see if there had been a discussion about it). Personally, I would be very much in favour of dropping the word "Village". No one in the local area except the residents' association seems to use the term "Galley Common Village"; the name of the place is simply "Galley Common", after all (cf. OS maps, local media, postal addresses). Even estate agents (whom one might expect to jump on the opportunity to "ruralise" the area by tacking on "Village" at the end) seem not to use it. In my view, the suffix "Village" is purely a vanity term that does not have its place in an encyclopedia.
If it were the name of a civil parish (which is not the case, as Nuneaton and Bedworth is entirely unparished), or if it were a name created (and agreed upon in conjunction with local authorities) to differentiate between two geographical entities (as is the case with Hawkesbury Village, for example, which is completely detached from the older hamlet of Hawkesbury), there would be some justification for it, but neither situation applies here. Besides, Galley Common has, if anything, become less of a village and more of a suburb ever since the construction of the large housing estate in the late 1980s/early 1990s (creating a virtually continuous built-up area between Galley Common and Whittleford).
