Merge with G8 article

It seems to me that almost all of the info here is contained in the article G8 and this should be merged and redirected there. Comments?--KeithbobTalk 22:46, 24 January 2012 (UTC)

G7 and G8 are totally different above all politically and in composition. It depends on weaatlth of n.ations too.Russia has a political weight but not a waelthy weight like the G7 members. That's and another huge difference from G8.To give you an idea the only Italy has a net global net wealth 11 times the russian one.Russia it's in G8 just for political reasons. It's a financial dwarf.Gdp it's what a country poduces in a year, but it isn't its wealth. The real wealthy nations are in the G7. G7 is alive still today and Russia is out. Merging would be a sign of superficial behaviour and ignorance about policy and economy.

Not exactly how I'd put it anon, but I'd agree G7 and G8 are best not merged. I took the liberty of removing the merge discussion tag as there has been opposition and no support for over a year. FeydHuxtable (talk) 17:33, 17 February 2013 (UTC)

The 2 articles can't be merged, they are 2 totally different things.G7 is economic and G8 is political.Russia in fact has a national net wealth very small and not significant to be accepted in the G7.G7 takes place generally always before the G8 and it has a higher prestige. The G7 is much more important than the G8 (without money-G7- it's difficult to decide a policy-G8- for the future).151.40.13.136 (talk) 10:37, 10 October 2013 (UTC)

The two orgs are distinct in so many ways. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 94.1.73.2 (talk) 11:27, 2 December 2013 (UTC)

Agree with whats been stated above. Most importantly, the G7 CONTINUES to exist even though the G8 was founded. There seems to be ample consensus on this page to keep. I will take the tag - now more than 2 years on the article- off. --Wuerzele (talk) 04:10, 25 March 2014 (UTC)

I disagree. The two organisations are one organisation. The articles are virtually identical, down to the list of supposed G7 and G8 meetings towards the end, which are the same in both articles. A meeting happening at the same time with the same people in the same place cannot be a meeting of two different groups. The informal system of labelling groups of countries meeting at summits as "G" followed by a number is confusing, admittedly. There are no real rules. But the G7 and G8 are the same thing under different names (G8 is no longer used because Russia isn't invited to the meetings any more). I am not dedicated enough to merge the two articles, but the discussion above seems bizarrely out of kilter with reality to me, so I thought I'd leave a dissenting comment. 94.125.131.41 (talk) 17:57, 15 September 2016 (UTC)

This proposed merger was rejected in the talk page of Group of Eight for the reasons given there. -- Agrestis (talk) 09:07, 11 April 2017 (UTC)

G7 Membership - By net worth

I can't help noticing the article refers to the G7 members being the 7 wealthiest net worth economies from the Credit-Suisse report. However, having just looked at the report, it would appear that Canada is nowhere near qualifying and China is omitted. Aside from that the statement appears to be accurate. Please correct me if I'm mistaken, but I feel the article is inaccurate as it stands.— Preceding unsigned comment added by {} (talk • contribs)

China is not a developed country or a major advanced economy. Therefore, it does not meet the criteria to be a G7 member, thus it isn't a member. Antiochus the Great (talk) 00:24, 5 December 2014 (UTC)
What is a "major advanced economy"? Is this a scientific term? Being a member of the 7 major advanced economies (whatever that is) is not a "requirement" for becoming a member of G7. There is no mechanism in place which grants a new "major advanced economy" a place or removes another.

I think the formulation "A very high net national wealth and a very high Human Development Index are the main requirements to be a member of this group." is inaccurate (and is not cited by the way). Joachimrang (talk) 13:46, 27 May 2017 (UTC)
