Talk:Göta älv

Latest comment: 6 years ago by TonyBallioni in topic Requested move 31 December 2017

I'd like to move this to Göta River. A google search give some 600 hits. Fred-Chess 19:53, 22 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

I cannot really agree with this move. A google search on English pages (with an additional search for either and or it to weed out some unspecified) for Göta älv gives more than 13,000 hits. --Sannab 20:53, 21 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
I agree with Sanna, "Göta River" seems like another move to standardize something that doesn't have to be standardized. Most people who are looking for the river would probably search for "göta älv" anyway. /Grillo 20:56, 21 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Clarification Needed edit

From the first line: "It has the largest drainage basin and the highest water discharge." Largest and highest of what? Rivers in Sweden? Rivers in Scandinavia? Rivers in Europe? A source (of the fact, not the river) would be nice too. Rojomoke (talk) 14:49, 13 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Göta älvGöta RiverWP:UCRN "Göta älv" not recognizable as river in other articles and would require "the river Göta älv" to not confuse the reader, which would be silly. See also https://www.britannica.com/place/Gothenburg-Sweden and many Google Books results, e.g. twice as many (and better ones, and more by native English speakers) for <"göta river" estuary> as for <"göta älv" estuary> e.g. both academic books like https://books.google.fi/books?id=g3UZBwAAQBAJ and popular books like https://books.google.fi/books?id=8iJpCgAAQBAJ Espoo (talk) 17:51, 31 December 2017 (UTC) --Relisting.   Comment:The second of your sources seem to use both "Göta älv" and "Göta river", possibly due to different contributors. Also, when searching for <"Göta River" water> and <"Göta älv" water> in Google Books, there was not a large difference in the number of hits (138 vs 120). The same is actually also true if you use "estuary" instead (33 vs 28; note that you actually have to try to find the end of the list of hits to see how many there actually are, as google grossly overreports the number). "Göta river" only seems slightly more common. As for "silly", English is full of that sort of thing, see list of tautological place names. Andejons (talk) 15:32, 4 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
