Hermione Voyage 2015

Hi,

By pure chance, was in Washington on business in June 2015 for a meeting in the Crystal City complex near Washington National Airport. To save money, stayed at a hotel in Alexandria commuting back and forth by Metro. Galliards?

What are Galliards? I find no definition of a Galliard anywhere online, or on Wikitionary. Is it a french term?

Maybe a late answer. Literally, the very first meaning of the French word gaillard is = a strong valorous guy, mainly deserving.

However, in its naval terminology, the right translation is forecastle, an upper deck on a ship.

In French, we may consider several ‘gaillards’ [forecasles] on a sailing ship, with a ‘gaillard d'avant‘ [forecasle] and a ‘gaillard d'arrière‘ [quaterdeck? below deck? sterncastle? aftercastle —or sometimes aftcastle?].
