Designated areas

The Schedule at the end of the Act, at least as given on the Government of Ontario e-Laws site, does not contain exactly the same municipalities as those listed here. As the schedule explicitly states that only the city of Hamilton as it existed on December 31, 2000 (i.e. pre-amalgamation) is included in the designated areas, it seems that municipalities do not need to be included in their entirety. But does that mean that only the areas corresponding to the former municipalities listed in the Schedule are designated areas today, not the entire amalgamated municipalities? The list in the article contains both newly-amalgamated (i.e. Lakeshore) and former (Tilbury and Winchester) municipalities, so I'm a bit confused. //Essin (talk) 23:55, 12 April 2010 (UTC)

Lakeshore might be a bad example, as all the amalgamated municipalities there are listed in the Schedule, but what about e.g. Whitewater Region, where only Westmeath is listed? //Essin (talk) 19:20, 13 April 2010 (UTC)

I went through the Schedule and noted any differences I could find. Assuming that only the parts of amalgamated municipalities that are listed under their pre-amalgamation names are designated areas, which is only a guess on my part, the following differences exist:

• Amherstburg: The area corresponding to the former Township of Anderdon (not listed here)
• Chatham-Kent: The area corresponding to the former Town of Tilbury, and the former Townships of Dover and Tilbury East (only Tilbury listed here)
• Essex: The area corresponding to the former Township of Colchester North (not listed here)
• Greenstone: The area corresponding to the former Towns of Geraldton and Longlac, and the former Townships of Beardmore and Nakina (currently listed as Greenstone, without comment)
• Hamilton: The area that was part of the city before 2001 (currently listed as Hamilton, without comment)
• Laurentian Valley: The area corresponding to the former Township of Stafford (currently listed as Laurentian Valley, without comment)
• North Dundas: The area corresponding to the former Township of Winchester (currently listed as Winchester)
• Sandwich West (is that the area now known as the Town of LaSalle?)
• Tecumseh (the former Village of St. Clair Beach is not mentioned in the Schedule, so I don't know if that area is included or not)
• Whitewater Region: The area corresponding to the former Township of Westmeath (currently listed as Whitewater Region, without comment)

Again, I don't know much about this at all, I just want to understand how services in French work in Ontario.

Another question: how are designated areas counted? I can't understand how it ends up at 25. (That's the figure the Office of Francophone Affairs provides as well. //Essin (talk) 22:49, 13 April 2010 (UTC)

I agree with your interpretation that municipalities do not have to be covered in their entirety. The Hamilton example is a good one, as it underwent a significant amalgamation in 2001. I believe that as both the Schedule and the Map specifically state that only the city of Hamilton as it existed on December 31, 2000 is included, this would indeed indicate that municipalities need not be included in their entirety. Going by this logic, Ancaster, Dundas, Flamborough, Glanbrook and Stoney Creek, all of which joined Hamilton in 2001, are not covered under the French Languages Service act. --Vcmiller (talk) 14:38, 31 October 2011 (UTC)
