I just tuned into the end of a program on ITV1 (UK) which started at 12:15am called "Nightwatch with steve scott" which examines famous murders. It provided much information which seems to back up this article, but I've missed most of it! Some years ago, as an Hon member of the London ex-boxers' association, I attended a ceremony in a Bournemouth Park, where a memorial was unveiled in memory of Freddie Mills. I cannot find any mention of this. either in Freddie Mills' personal history, or in information about the town of Bournemouth. I believe the existence of this memorial justifies publicity. Improvements

I've added a few refs, which takes the article up to start class. The annoying thing, as I know from my Horse Racing articles, is that Newspapers during WW2 were very restricted, for obvious reasons. I think it's coming along nicely though.  Tigerboy1966  12:51, 20 May 2012 (UTC)

Lurid rumours

Not altogether happy about the section on the rumours that followed Mills suicide. There are no contemporary news sources (which is what I usually prefer) but well regarded sources like the Guardian and the Observer seemed happy to report them years later.  Tigerboy1966  18:16, 21 May 2012 (UTC)

Well, it's 2016--did the book ever come out? Was it well-researched with sources, or like this section of wikipedia's article? Place of Birth

Is there a reliable source that says Mills was born in Parkstone? The more common story is that he was born and raised in Terrace Road, Bournemouth. There is even a plaque dedicated to him at the Littledown Centre.--Ykraps (talk) 13:50, 9 September 2012 (UTC)

As there has been no discussion on this subject, I am being Bold and changing the information in the article. Interestingly the Terrace Road area was once part of the Branksome estate but this was over 100 years before Mills' birth.--Ykraps (talk) 19:27, 8 November 2012 (UTC)

Successful night club, but heavily in debt to gangsters?

There seems to be an obvious conflict in these two statements. Why would he be in debt to gangsters in these circumstances unless he was living beyond his means?46.7.195.132 (talk) 21:52, 1 August 2018 (UTC)

I don't see it as a conflict necessarily. There are many reasons why someone might refuse to pay a debt, of which, not having the money is only one.--Ykraps (talk) 10:37, 3 August 2018 (UTC)

Possible explanations that have been put forward were that Mills was being forced to pay protection money or was the victim of extortion. In Bill Bavin's book, he describes an arson attempt on the nightclub by what he considered to be a group pf gangsters, possibly in response to Mills refusing to pay them. --Michig (talk) 17:17, 12 August 2018 (UTC)

Was his Chinese Restaurant opened in 1946 or 1948?

Referring to the book Jack of Jumps by David Seabrook (Granta Books, 2006), page 252, it is ambiguous from the text whether the business was formed in 1946 or 1948 (or even 1947) as both 1946 and 1948 are mentioned in the boxing context and then it goes directly on to a mention of the restaurant but with no formation date listed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.22.252.68 (talk) 21:26, 21 October 2020 (UTC)
