Obama

Does anyone have any evidence that Raines is an economic advisor to Obama? The only thing I found was a WaPo story that said that Raines had received calls from the Obama campaign. He is certainly not "chief economic advisor." If anyone has anything on this please reply. Otherwise I'll investigate further at the end of the day. Thanks. Yeah, I found no mention of Raines with Obama until a September 8, 2008 article in the American Spectator that claimed he was one of Obama's chief economic advisors. The article was written by someone who prefers anonymity, just the moniker The Prowler.206.190.137.34 (talk) 20:49, 18 September 2008 (UTC)

I included a mention of the ad and denial as it is notable considering it involves him in the presidential campaign. I sourced the politico piece and think that should be sufficient unless we also need an article referring to the ad. A right wing blog releases lists two articles the McCain campaign is referring to as evidence of a link: (Anita Huslin, "On The Outside Now, Watching Fannie Falter," The Washington Post, 7/16/08) and The Washington Post: 'Two Members Of Mr. Obama's Political Circle, James A. Johnson And Franklin D. Raines, Are Former Chief Executives Of Fannie Mae.' (Editorial, 'Tough Decision Coming,' The Washington Post, 8/28/08). I imagine this will devolve into a he said/she said argument, so I've tried to include it in a neutral way. Why does this portion of the article deserve 1/3 of the total length? The man was in his role at FNMA for a total of 10 years. Surely there are fascinating things during his tenure that can be covered. The section looks like it was added during the election so I understand why people were passionate about it. The section also ends pretty weakly: 'He said, she said'. A year later, who really cares? Should this be moved to an article entitled "Political Campaign Attempts to Connect Obama to Raines", or "Political Campaign Attempts to Connect Obama to People With Negative Public Perceptions"?

You hit the nail on the head with those suggested titles. That's all it was about. Raines claims to some WP reporter that the Obama camp telephoned for advice and all of a sudden he's Obama's chief economic advisor to the Republicans because he has a bad rep for mortgage crisis stuff. $700 billion bailout

Since the price of the bailout has now been fixed at $700 billion dollars the last few days I think this information needs to be incorporated into the article.

There is a C-Span clip of Franklin Raines promoting a one trillion dollar Fannie Mae fund for subprime loans - this should be mentioned and it is surprising that is absent from the piece. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FewmvkaTXHU&feature=player_embedded

Name

In the article on Raines, the nickname "Fred" seems to have been added to his name fairly recently. I have never heard Raines referred to as Fred, but rather as Franklin or Frank, so I think this should be changed. 129.25.28.73 (talk) 18:53, 5 November 2008 (UTC)

Raines Not First African American to Lead a Fortune 500 Co.

While reading this, I thought of the late Reginald Lewis, former owner of Beatrice Foods TLC. I do not know if he was the first such A A, but he definitely preceded Raines' (dubious) achievement. This error is apparently attributed to Ebony magazine, to which I have been a subscriber for a number of years.
