National Origin edit

If Francisco Sanches is Portuguese or Spanish, is a very difficult question to answer. About his origins, the father was Spanish, and the mother Portuguese. The father run way from Spain to Portugal, and later to France. We know he was baptized in Braga, Portugal. But the interesting is the way he sign his name during the all life: Franciscus Sanches Bracarensis. As usual in those times he sign the name in Latin, and finishing with the town were he belongs (born or baptism) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Joseolgon (talkcontribs)

He was a Sephardi Jew originally, and there were many intermarriages between Portuguese and Spanish Sephardi. However, given the fact that he was baptised shortly or immediatley after his birth and that he always signed his name as Francisco Sanches of Braga, there is little controversy today in considering him a Portuguese of Sephardi origin. In "Gran Enciclopedia Gallega" (in Spanish, ISBN 84-7286-215-1, vol. 27, p. 228) states clearly that Sanches himself wrote in his inscription note for Montepellier's Medical College 'natus in civitate Tudensi'. Obviously, such Encyclopaedia states him as born in Tui, Kingdom of Galicia at that time. The central point here is that the linguistic differences at that time between Galician and Portuguese were very little, if any remarkable, at that point that many Galicians could be not differenciated from Northern portuguese at all (and vice versa). Besides, as he clearly lived all his childhood in Braga, it obviously can be considered as portuguese, or anyway, not spaniard in the modern sense or in the castilian sense.91.117.9.231 (talk) 13:45, 15 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Okay, where is the evidence that he was a converso? It's not even cited yet is stated 3 times in the article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2600:1700:69C1:2A00:ECE3:9432:174F:1527 (talk) 22:02, 29 May 2018 (UTC)Reply
