car licence edit

The article says some of the funding came from "the produce of car licences" (guess it means a tax on those). But what, in the 18th century, is a "car licence"? -- Finlay McWalter··–·Talk 23:27, 14 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

I have removed the car licences bit because it is unsourced and makes no sense. Dormskirk (talk) 23:44, 14 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. Without an explanation, it does seem odd. I checked the provenance of this part of the article, and it dates back to the original Wikipedia article foundling hospital (from which this was spun out), which was in turn imported from the 1911 Britannica article Foundling Hospitals. That indeed does use that exact term. I guess it meant something back then, but it's so archaic as to be unintelligible now. Curiouser and curiouser. -- Finlay McWalter··–·Talk 00:16, 15 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

Expansion edit

I believe there should be more expansion about activity within the household. Was there only one set of parents who took in illegitimate children? How did they keep the children occupied?
