Redirect edit

I don't understand the redirect to dynamics. Isn't this word most commonly used in music?

If you actually read dynamics, it should be clear. As it's turned out that "forte" means one thing, the page shouldn't be a redirect, of course, but I didn't know that when I made it redirect. --Camembert

Fortay edit

Calling the use of the pronunciation "fortay" when talking about someone's strong point is POV. See discussion on List of words of disputed pronunciation. I don't have time to fix this now, but I will soon. Nohat 03:42, 2004 Apr 14 (UTC)

Computer language edit

I've seen reference to a computer language called Forte. Does anyone know anything about that?

I think you mean FORTRAN. And is this not a disambiguation? -James A. Calwell III 04:06, 19 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

"Forte" also means "strong" in Italian edit

"Forte" also means "strong" in Italian. It's an adjective, not a noun. ("Strength" is forza.) But the implication that it mostly means "loud" comes from people who don't speak Italian at all. Croctotheface (talk)

NOT false cognates edit

It is incorrect to say that the French "forte" and the Italian "forte" are false cognates, as they both derive from the Latin "fortis", meaning strong (as is actually explained in the Wiktionary entry). They are homographs, i.e. words with the same spelling but different meaning (in English anyway) Kompanier (talk) 16:33, 15 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

ForteForte (disambiguation) – This is so Forte can be redirected to Dynamics (music), as the musical instruction is clearly the primary topic here. Ego White Tray (talk) 04:37, 27 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

  • Oppose: While the musical term may be a common usage, I'm not sure it will be the most likely thing for someone to be looking for in an encyclopedia: all they need is a dicdef of "loud". There are such a wide range of other usages (including company name) that it seems best for the dab page to be at the base name. PamD 16:23, 27 February 2013 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose; does the musical term really achieve WP:PRIMARYTOPIC over all those other items on the dabpage? Really? bobrayner (talk) 19:43, 27 February 2013 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose it means expertise (a person's strong point, skill), not the musical topic. The convoluted dab page before being trimmed had that as the top entry. -- 65.92.180.137 (talk) 23:14, 27 February 2013 (UTC)Reply
In a dictionary, that may be a main usage, but not as an encyclopedia entry. I've tidied the dab page. PamD 10:02, 28 February 2013 (UTC)Reply
This is a disambiguation page. Further synonyms redirect to articles that cover their topics on Wikipedia. Therefore they should appear on this dab page, because they would be topics that one would want. -- 65.92.180.137 (talk) 15:04, 28 February 2013 (UTC)Reply
