Ford & Conrad edit

One of the things clearly missing from this piece is a discussion of Ford's collaboration with Conrad, and their joint/parallel creation of the unreliable narrator -- a founding element of modern fiction.

Ford with the Royal Welch? edit

That's part of the problem: there is no outline of Ford's life. Btw the entry on No More Parades says that Ford was an officer with the Royal Welch Fusiliers, which does not sound correct to me. As far as I know Ford was not in service on the western front, but worked in the British military propaganda.--213.140.21.227 19:38, 11 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Actually Ford himself, in his memoir It was the Nightingale, says he was with the Royal Welch Fusiliers (p. 21, Ecco edition). Also the entry of the Royal Welch Fusiliers on the Wikipedia lists Ford among the members. On the other hand it is true that Ford worked for the propaganda, but the two activities may not be incompatible. --213.140.21.227 (talk) 08:41, 21 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Says Ford in his memoir: "I had been for the whole period of the war on the Western front with my nose so close to the grindstone of affairs that, as soon as I had any leisure, I really thirsted to knoe something about the events of war and the world outside my own three inches on the map." Yet Buitenhuis talks about him in his essay on propaganda in W.W.I. We should check Buitenhuis' essay before settling this issue.--213.140.21.227 (talk) 09:50, 21 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Now the issue of propaganda and participation to the war has been cleared, as you can see in the article. First he wrote war propaganda, then he went to the Flanders fields. I checked on Buitenhuis, and the matter is well documented there. Should I add a footnote?--James.kerans (talk) 10:37, 29 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Yes, some dates would be welcome. From one biography, I calculated that he was only in the front line for ten days (but these were ten days of the Somme), and his nervous breakdown took him out of the action after that. Valetude (talk) 15:46, 7 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Chronology edit

Is it correct that his "Writing Period" includes works published posthumously? It says he wrote through 1971, though he died over 30 year prior to that 24.22.53.24 08:22, 3 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Change of name edit

Can someone please explain to me how changing his last name to Ford honours a relative whose last name was Brown, given that his first name was already "Ford" as per that relative. If this sounds confused, it is because I am. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Sitush (talkcontribs) 16:55, 12 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Sounds clear enough to me. In the English scheme of things, one can change their name almost instantly and at low cost by Deed Poll. Ford just rearranged the names he liked, 'Ford Madox' for the first and middle names of his grandfather and repeating the 'Ford' from his original first name.--TGC55 (talk) 10:58, 13 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
I believe the family were German Jews and he changed his name after WWI. Have sources, will find. Truthkeeper (talk) 19:36, 13 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
People expected him to change his German surname as soon as he joined the army. For some reason, he refused to do this until after the war. Valetude (talk) 12:53, 1 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Ford as a composer edit

Evidently, he also wrote music: Sondra J. Stang and Carl Smith "Music for a while": Ford's Compositions for Voice and Piano Contemporary Literature, Vol. 30, No. 2, Ford Madox Ford and the Arts (Summer, 1989), pp. 183-223. Perhaps it would be worth a reference in the article. --62.65.236.45 (talk) 15:38, 8 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

Page 99 test quote edit

Does anybody have a reference for the quote "Open the book to page ninety-nine and read, and the quality of the whole will be revealed to you"? The earliest reference I could find was William Gass's "A temple of texts: Fifty literary pillars" from 1991.ChickSR (talk) 10:11, 2 December 2019 (UTC)Reply

Excellent research by Marshal Zeringue on this:
