"Football (elliptical)" or "elliptical football" is a nonsense term, i.e. it is not used anywhere except here. There is therefore no need for this page and I think it should be a candidate for deletion. Grant65 (Talk) 10:35, Mar 29, 2005 (UTC)

On 1 April 2005, this article was nominated for deletion. The result was redirect to Football. See Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Football (disambiguation) for a record of the discussion. – ABCD 01:46, 13 Apr 2005 (UTC)

this page should mention soccer

edit

why do soccer fans have to be so prissy about not wanting to call their game soccer? A majority of the English speaking world refers to this game as soccer, not as football. It does not matter what they call it in France and Germany and Brazil etc. Those are not English speaking countries. In the English speaking world, the majority calls the game soccer. American football fans don't try to "own" the word and disavow other ways of referring to the game. Soccer is a perfectly acceptable word, and frankly, NOBODY calls the game Association Football. Wikipedia should not be used for POV. 68.174.97.122 (talk) 04:29, 19 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

I suggest you read the following: names for association football, WP:ENGVAR, and especially WP:RETAIN. Still, I agree that the word soccer could be used here to help North American English speakers identify the "football" they may be seeking. Hoof Hearted (talk) 20:17, 21 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
