Derivation edit
The derivation given in the article is certainly the conventional one, but is it definitely the only one? The ancestors of Baron Foley go back to the father of Richard Foley, a nailer of Dudley, who died in 1601. He may have been related to people called Foley at Rowley Regis, who appear in the earliest parish register for that parish, probably in the 1540s. I have also seen a reference to a cottage belonging to people whose surname was nearly the same in manor rolls for Cannock of (I think) the time of Edward III. This is certainly long before there was significant Irish immigration to England; that also applies to the other two references. Peterkingiron (talk) 23:36, 11 July 2008 (UTC)
Misinformation edit
It is mentioned that Foley has a loose meaning of 'pirate' or 'marauder' in Anglo-Saxon. Anglo-Saxon is surely an error. It should be (Old) Gaelic/Irish. --CavallèroTalk 19:01, 11 August 2011 (UTC)
