Open date vs. completion
editConstruction of the railroad started in 1855 from Fernandina. Turner, A Journey into Florida Railroad History pp. 76-77, indicates that the railroad had not yet opened to revenue traffic in 1857, but that is was open in 1858, by which time it had reached Starke. The 1861 date is when the line was completed to Cedar Key, and could begin earning substantial revenue from the cross-peninsula transfer of freight between ocean-going vessels. I think the statement in the second paragraph of the History section, By 1858 the rail line was open between Fernandina and Starke ...
, covers this adequately. Donald Albury 17:21, 18 September 2023 (UTC)
- And the Florida Railroad was chartered by the State Legislature in 1853. The earlier charters were for other railroads that were not connected to the Florida Railroad. Donald Albury 17:47, 18 September 2023 (UTC)
