Do not upload images to Commons from the version digitized by the University of Copenhagen edit

A word of caution. Scans / photographic images of this work is in all likelihood PD under US law. However, the same is not the case under Danish law. In Denmark, such works are protected 50 years from the creation of the actual photograph. The Danish National Library of Science and Medicine (Danmarks Natur- og Lægevidenskabelige Bibliotek) [1] received government funding from the Danish Ministry of Culture for digitizing the entire work but expressly demanded that the Danish Wikipedia remove the copies of some of these illustrations that had been uploaded there. In short: the version digitized in 1998 in Copenhagen won't be PD under Danish law before 2048 unless the archive either changes its mind later or Danish law is amended. For the moment, please don't upload such images to the Wikimedia Commons. Any such images uploaded to the English Wikipedia should be expressly tagged with "Fair use" to avoid these images being copied to the Commons. Valentinian T / C 19:29, 24 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
