Well I'd guess they aren't recommended where it might be wet as the water can get below them around the edges. That's just a guess though. Personally I wonder whether it mightn't be better for water to seep below if it can evaporate off as there is a separation between thee wood and the floor whereas if the wood was straight on the floor it could get soaked.
