@Ojsyork: The article makes some mention of railway companies and the average reader may not understand what they had to do with boats and harbours. So, perhaps some explanation would help? Oh, I Don't know.
I know there was a huge station at Fleetwood, no doubt to connect with Isle of Man steam packet services. I guess they just wanted to build an extension as even today, the lifeboat station is right next to where the Fleetwood station would have ended (had it not been demolished).
I'll see what I can find out and re-edit.
Otherwise, the Rali companies did seem to regularly deliver Lifeboat for free around the country.
