I heard that this flag was created by a student on a computor based on the cornish one? dunno if this is true, if so could be put in as tis interesting. Also does anyone know how it was 'deidicated to st petroc' ie how this was decided? another poll? 131.111.8.104

I think perhaps the 'conterversy' bit needs to be explained a bit more. The 'jealousy' bit isn't that well worded, it should probably be noted that the origninal conversation that this originated from did ( i think?) start with talking about the cornish flag, and that bbcs devon's articles made it fairly clear that the cornish flag was the spur to its creation (whatever tourism etc. benifits it has brung.) Haven't changed it cause im not too great at wording. Dunno about the phrase 'cornish nationalist' being used but can't think of a replacement,as in i think that 'claim' was pretty much common sense given the information rather than 'cornish nationalism'. Also I think it should be noted somehow that the 'need' for a flag or 'relavence' has been questioned by a number of people. I may not be wording this propally even here! I think the 'flap about the flag' to borrow a phrase is probably at least, if not more, important than the flag here, after all its not a real historical country or region flag so theres not much else to write about. After all it is a flag created VERY recently by a SMALL internet poll, and yet now a fair number of people (from what ive seen) have adopted it, indeed bbc devon seems to use it a fair amount, which suprises me to be honest as it seemed a pretty strange thing to support in the first place before it had been jumped on. 131.111.8.104

Opening paragraph, POV and citations

MacRusgail, can you please give a reason for your reverting my edits? I have given my reasons in the edit summaries - to remove POV and redundancy from the initial section and to ask for citations for the criticism section. I would also appreciate it if you didn't just revert my contributions - if you believe they are wrong and feel the need to change them, please comment on the talk page rather than just reverting without meaningful summary. I was initially under the impression that you believed I was just a vandal, but it seems clear that you're more intent in just reinserting unsourced POV. When to fly (St Piran)

I have removed a section by MacRusgail which he had added and then re-added claiming that its removal was "anti Cornish bias."
The sentence in question was after regarding the fact that the Flag of Devon should be flown in the county to commemerate St Piran's day. This being because he is the patron saint of tin minors (of which Devon historically had many.) MacRusgail then saw fit to add that St Piran is also the patron saint of cornwall, although this may be the case (actually St Micheal and St Petrock also claim this title, but this is not the page to hold such a debate) the fact that St Piran is patron saint of another county bares no relevance to the fact that his day is commemerated in Devon. In Devon it is commemerated purely because he is the patron saint of tin minors. --Greatestrowerever 19:23, 31 May 2007 (UTC)

The fact that the Flag of Devon is flown on th efeast day of st piran is due to the fact that st piran is the patron saint of tin minors (of which devon had many), this is what is mentioned in the article. The article is only concerned with when and why the flag of devon is flown, not an info page on the various patronage's of different westcounty saints (most of them have more than one patronage, St Boniface for example who is patron of brewers, file cutters, Fulda, The Netherlands and Germany, but is commemerated in Devon because he originated in Crediton). Therefore the fact that st piran is a patron of cornwall does not need to be mentioned in the flag of devon article (i will remind you that there is a wikilink to the st piran page which does list his other patronages).--86.146.194.179 13:06, 10 June 2007 (UTC)

Petroc dedication

how was the flag dedicated to st. Petroc? and/or who did it? was it the original creator or the council? can't find this anywhere but if someone could get a reference that would be good. BLM 86.139.251.218

I'm aware of this dedication too - we could do with some kind of citation for this, as anyone who adds mention of this ends up with it being removed again, often by helpful anonymous IP editors, which has an ever dwindling amusement value. I know the poem connected to the flag directly mentions St Petroc - is this why the association occurs? Generally most 'cross' flags - at least equilateral ones such as Cornwall, England, Wales, Scotland/Russia and Ireland have saint associations. Viking crosses tend not to. I've added a link in the Reference section to the Flag Institute, who advise the UK Government and United Nations on the use of flags (since 1971). They list it as St Petroc's Cross. This isn't an argument to authority - it's just they use that name, and so one must assume that is the main name of the flag. Stevebritgimp (talk) 22:11, 19 December 2007 (UTC)

Re-written

Have re-added critisism section, also added about flag ban and blind eye thing. I've tried to make this a balanced and realistic article, not a CN rant or an attempt to justify the flag and ignore its web poll creation. I've tried to do all this in a fairly positive way and add in more details than where there before, trying not to gloss over things, I mean this is a flag created on the internet and yet the designer/ how this happened was not mentioned!

This is something that could be expanded on, I suggest the content be re-shuffled and expandedinto these sections:

• usage/adoption/history  : dont know what to call this but basically what has happened after
• critisms Or this might be better called reactions?

Law of tincture

The placement of the colours (specifically placing sable on vert) violates the heraldic rule of tincture.

Maybe worth St Winfrid (St Boniface) getting a word

Needs explaining why a religious theme (anent the flag) was drawn to in the first place, though, indeed, Devonshire is blessed with many an historical inborn Saint and such. Furthermore, unlike St Patrick, St Boniface (St Winfrid) was a known born and bred Devon Saint. Indeed, The deeds of St Boniface somewhat outshine St Patrick. St Boniface was hight: 'apostle of the Germans', the Englishman is to this day, the patron Saint of both Germany and the Netherlands. Mayhap St Winfrid is likelimost the man behind the christmas tree tradition also.
