In a recent article, the on line international edition of Helsingin Sanomat (the major newspaper of Finland) quoted Professor Juha Janhunen as saying, “In reality, only the Swedish-speakers need to learn Finnish. Finnish-speakers are required to learn Swedish, but they don’t actually do it”. This is an excellent point that reinforces the senselessness of mandatory Swedish language in Finnish schools and society. Moreover, when Finnish students are busy learning an archaic form of Swedish, often taught by teachers who may not be very good at practical aspects of the language, such as actual usage or even pronunciation, Swedish-speaking students in Finland (and Sweden!) are busy learning English and other international languages, and certainly NOT Finnish. Yet, as a "bi-lingual" country, Finland is still expected to provide everything in both Finnish and Swedish. Hmmmm..., I wonder what language most immigrants are able to speak in Finland.... Why on Earth Finnish students and others should be burdened by learning Swedish in the 21st century is a peculiar mystery.
