The 2006 Census states 21,000 as the population. Why does the other section of census state 100,000? With a total household number of around 3,000? There are 30 people living in each household? Made the necessary changes. --Mincan 06:13, 16 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Does Fergus really have half a million people? It must be the best kept secret in Ontario! April 4, 2007: "Fergus is a town of 521,017 (2006) people..." We should really keep updating this info...

Important Notes about Fergus (From a resident) edit

Fergus is a part of the municipal amalgemation of Fergus, Elora, Salem, Aboyne, and Belwood which is called Centre Wellington. Town council is located in Elora, and as such Fergus resembles a small scale version of Cambridge (Which is an amalgemation of Galt, Hespler and Preston)

Current Mayor is Joanne Ross-Zuj.

Fergus has some significant landmarks which are not all recognized as such, and several are under fire from the town council. Two of which are the Fergus Swimming Pool, originally donated by the Beatty Brothers, and the Recreation Complex which too was donated by the Beatty Brothers. The Beatty Mill, which is now the Fergus Market, and the adjoined weir, is another significant landmark. The weir was standing until just recently when town council voted not to repair it because of costs which would involve the construction of a new weir. The MNR & GRCA ministry approvals prevented the repair of the weir and would only allow a newly constructed weir to be built. As a result of the removal, the river again flows freely through the town.

Fergus is currently in industrial crisis. The former Wolverine Ratcliffe plant (closed) and the Moores Forms plant (slow phase out of plant). While others such as the Nexan (formerly Canada Wire) and GSW plants are operating better than expected. Numerous job losses over the last several years has created a vacuum for employment opportunities in Fergus, and has lead to the creation of a "bedroom community". More than 2/3 to 3/4 of the population works outside of the town, either in the surrounding Waterloo-Wellington region or in Toronto. There should be more notes on Fergus's industry.

Living in Fergus, there is much to do. The Elora-Cataract Trailway goes right through the town and is a multi-use trail. The Grand River provides many recreational opportunities -- fishing, kayaking or canoeing. Lake Belwood is three miles to the east and is also on the trailway. Elora is also close by and has the Elora Gorge Park to hike, camp, tube canoe or kayak.

In winter there is an extensive snowmobile trail system that is at your door! Cross country skiing, and skating at indoor and outdoor sites make the season fly by.
