Recommend alternate phrasing, and clarify that they were shot after surrender was accepted. Perhaps "... were shot by Wehrmacht (not SS) units after their surrender was accepted." The emphasis on not the SS comes across as slightly POV.

I think this could be clarified. By "fundamental" you mean "in principle", "principled", "humanitarian" or due to respect for the rule of law, but I'm not sure which.
