OS or distribution

Is Fedora an Operating System or a distribution of Linux ? DG12 (talk) 19:47, 23 April 2011 (UTC)

It's both. A Linux distro is a collection of software which comprises an operating system. 71.65.94.23 (talk) 08:55, 17 September 2011 (UTC)
Actually, Linux is (from the linked WP article of the same title);

...a Unix-like computer operating system assembled under the model of free and open source software development and distribution. The defining component of Linux is the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released 5 October 1991 by Linus Torvalds...

Under the terms of the appropriate license, the kernel may be modified, if one desires, and packaged with other software (like libraries and utilities which make the software work properly, or better, as the case may be) when appropriate and, if desired, additional application software. The entire package (kernel, libraries, and applications) is called a distribution. As an example, the Fedora 17 (operating system) kernel plus supporting utility libraries plus application software customized for use with the Fedora 17 kernel constitutes the Fedora 17 distribution.
