Federated Farmers has some information for the site edit

Hi there. My name is Shannon Gillies and I am a comms advisor for Federated Farmers. I'd like to upload information about the Federation. My contact information is sgillies@fedfarm.org.nz

This is the information I would like to upload to your site with citations I could find from groups outside of us:

Federated Farmers Wikipedia [1]

Federated Farmers of New Zealand is a lobby and advocacy group for farmers and rural communities. [2] [3] [4]

It represents 24 provinces. [5] [6]

They are listed as follows: Northland, Auckland, Waikato, Taranaki, Gisborne/Wairoa, Tararua, Hawke's Bay, Bay of Plenty, Wanganui, Manawatu/Rangitikei, Wairarapa, Hauraki-Coromandel, Ruapehu, North Canterbury, South Canterbury, Nelson, Mid Canterbury, West Coast, Otago, Marlborough, North Otago, Golden Bay and Southland.

Each province is served by its own executive board made up of local farmers. The idea behind that formation is that it’s farmers serving farmers. The current president of Federated Farmers is Katie Milne[7]. She is the first woman to hold the position. [8] Katie's formative years have been on the South Island’s West Coast. [9]; [10]; [11]

Other recent national presidents in order from most recent are Dr William Rolleston [12], Bruce Wills [13], Don Nicholson [14] and Charlie Pedersen.[15]

The national organisation’s recent chief executives and in order are: Terry Copeland [16], Graham Smith [17], Conor English [18] and Annabel Young. [19]

Farming is one of New Zealand’s main industries and exists on all three main New Zealand islands. [20]; [21]

Federated Farmers represents most agriculture groups. It has industry groups for beef, sheep, dairy, arable, rural butchers and mohair.

Federated Farmers runs a weekly newsletter called Friday Flash [22] best described as a news bulletin with a farming bent.

The lobby group’s other publications include the National Farming Review, [23] ; [24] Tussock Talk [25], and the Butcher’s Blurb.

Federated Farmers is a membership fed organisation and relies mostly on these membership fees to exist. [26] Federated Farmers has 13,000 members [27] and the bulk of the organisation’s income comes from membership subscriptions of just over $6 million.

The organisation claims to have the largest team of policy staff (30 people) working for it outside of any New Zealand government agency’. As well as being a lobby group, Federated Farmers is used by government organisations to help during adverse events such as the 2019 Tasman fire response and the 2017 Kaikoura earthquakes. • Thanks Shannon, sorry for the long delay. Pretty busy but will try and integrate this information into the article one day. Most of it comes from media and government sources. Andykatib 12:09, 21 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

Additional sources for expanding content edit

The involvement of Federated Farmers in the 2003 controversy over the (mis-named) "fart tax" seems notable. It is covered in Te Ara here: [1]. There is a wiki article on the Agricultural emissions research levy that could possibly also be linked into the content.

Probably the most significant lobbying issue (and controversy) involving Federated Farmers over the past decade is their response to government intentions to include agricultural emissions into climate change strategy (including emission levies and taxes etc). The agriculture sector is by far New Zealand's largest greenhouse gas emitter (almost half of all emissions). Some sources on this topic that mention Federated Farmers are [2], [3], [4],

Here is an independent journalist source dated August 2019 that sets out a critique of the Farmers Federation position on climate change strategy (and in particular, the pricing of agricultural emissions). There is an interesting comparison with the substantially different position taken by the UK’s National Farmers Union. It could be useful to include something from this critique.[5] Marshelec (talk) 02:14, 22 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
