Requested move

FC Metalurh Zaporizhzhya → FC Metalurh Zaporizhya – cut&paste move, requesting to move back in accordance with international usage. Conscious 10:37, 5 June 2006 (UTC)

I'm surprised to see this move because I believe that international usage is "Metalurh Zaporizhya" [1] (however, there are different versions [2] [3]). Please note that article about the city is Zaporizhzhia.
In case it's decided to use "Zaporizhzhya", I'm requesting a history merge. Conscious 10:43, 5 June 2006 (UTC)

    • I oppose only because the correct name of the city is Zaporizhzhia, also maybe translated into Zaporizhzhya. -ILDuceMas 18:54, 5 June 2006 (UTC)

  • In Ukrainian it is Запоріжжя, clearly with two of the letter "Zh". I do not think that it makes a huge difference but giving the city a whole different name is wrong. -ILDuceMas 18:57, 5 June 2006 (UTC)

move discussion closed

I removed the move announcement since the cut'n'paste move was reverted based purely by the fact that cut'n'paste was used. Now, to the issue. As per Romanization of Ukrainian#Table of romanization systems "Doubled consonants ж, х, ц, ч, ш are simplified, for example Запоріжжя→Zaporizhia." Read more at the link above.

For now, I suggest we just discuss the merits. And please no moves by cut'n'paste. We are all friends and we can figure out the best way just by discussing things. Thanks, all! --Irpen 22:20, 5 June 2006 (UTC)

Result was move. --Riurik(discuss) 08:26, 22 January 2008 (UTC)

Per Wikipedia:NC#Sports_teams, the question is whether the official name of the sports team under consideration has "no ambiguity" or "some ambiguity".

I think that the team's name is ambiguous, because while it has an official English website with its name on it, at least three versions of the name are used:

  1. Football Club "Metallurh Zaporozhye"
  2. Football Club Metalurg
  3. Metalurg

The team's name is also not widely recognized (at most a couple of hundred hits in Google news); if uefa is removed, the count lowers below 100 hits.

Therefore per above naming convention, which states and I quote:

.

This name, in this case, seems to be: FC Metalurh Zaporizhya

"fc metalurh zaporizhya" [4] - 132 with uefa

"fc metalurg zaporozhye" [5] - 0 with uefa

Without uefa "fc metalurh zaporizhya" -uefa 32 "fc metalurg zaporozhye" -uefa 0

There are zero hits in Google News for PFC Metalurg Zaporozhye.

Because of above, the article should be moved to FC Metalurh Zaporizhya.--Riurik(discuss) 01:11, 13 January 2008 (UTC)

  • Support - as nominator per reasoning explained above.--Riurik(discuss) 01:16, 13 January 2008 (UTC)
  • support - agreement with the conventions. Ostap 01:23, 13 January 2008 (UTC)

  • Neutral. The city name is Zaporizhzhya, but official site of the club gives the name "Professional Football Club “Metalurh-Zaporozhye”" (per WP:NC article must be named as at the official english-language site).--Ahonc (Talk)   15:52, 13 January 2008 (UTC)
  • Support - the popular name in the English media for the club is Metalurh Zaporizhya. When naming articles, one must consider what the readers know the topic as, which in this case is not Metalurg Zaporozhye. --Boguslav (talk) 01:08, 15 January 2008 (UTC)
