Modification Doktor Musmatta Commissioned Officer edit

Fänrik is the lowest commissioned officer rank.

Reply: Comissioned Officer edit

As a result of a reform (Ny Befals Ordning, eary 1980s), NCO, WO, CO were all made officers with the lowest rank set to Fanrik. Also, new officers no longer receive an officer’s commission (Officers fullmakt). That is, a Fanrik is an officer without commission. In other words a non-commissioned officer (NCO). An active officer who was made an officer before 1980 is, indeed, a commissioned officer. However, there should be no one in service today.

Therefore, we should use the more general term officer here.

As this rank is the lowest profesional military rank in Sweden, I changed it accordingly. --Malin Randstrom (talk) 15:06, 19 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Merge suggestion edit

If merged to Second Lieutenant, material on officer's training in Sweden could be salvaged to another article on that subject. Tomas e (talk) 18:54, 10 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Reply: Merge Suggestion edit

Thank you for your suggestion to merge with Second Lieutenant. Currently, this rank does not at all correspond to Second Lieutenant even though it is translated officially to this by the Swedish Armed Forces. Due to the major confusion regarding Swedish ranks cased by the implemenation of the NBO reform 1983, a new two-career-path system is being implemented that will elevate this rank closer to Second Lieutenant. NBO 83 is a very unfortunate social experiment (absurd) where all military personnel should be officers with the lowest professional rank set to Fanrik. You are certainly aware of the hyper inflation of Swedish ranks while the ranks of other nations such as in the US Army and USCM have been constant. In effect Fanrik become what corporals use to be.

The educational information is part of defining the rank and I agree that it should be put somewhere else with a link from this page to that page.

Edits regarding vänrikki edit

I appreciate all your edits; but your claim that a vänrikki, who has only 12 months of military service, is assigned as commander of a battery or company upon mobilization seems very unlikely. Please verify this. --Malin Randstrom (talk) 05:56, 28 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

A vänrikki will not be assigned a company commander duty. That requires subsequent training in refresher exercises and promotion to at least first lieutenant (yliluutnantti). However, a battery commander duty is much easier and reserve officers are trained to act in such positions during their conscription. --MPorciusCato (talk) 20:16, 30 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
