Is there any way to expand this? As it stands, it is basically a WP:DICDEF and it is not a good one at that. For example, see my recent comment about the differences between an Oxbridge exhibition and scholarship here. - Sitush (talk) 17:06, 2 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

Reason for the name? edit

Why is this type of award called an exhibition? At first glance the name looks as if it could indicate that something is being shown or displayed - but in that case, what would be the "something"?

Or does the word have a different meaning altogether in this case, perhaps something like "remedy for an inhibition", in the sense that it was meant to allow a good student to carry on rather than being inhibited (held back) for lack of money?

Whatever the real reason for the name, it would be nice to have it here, hopefully with a quotation from some very old source that makes it obvious how the word is being used. TooManyFingers (talk) 15:38, 30 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
