I propose to either move this article to First Minister and Deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland, or change Deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland from a redirect to here to an actual article by moving some content there.

Irish Names

It will need to be shown the Irish names of for the First and Deputy First Ministers are used officially, otherwise they will be removed again. NotMuchToSay 16:35, 19 December 2006 (UTC)

Requested move

• First Minister of Northern Ireland → Office of the First Minister and Deputy First Minister —(Discuss)— The current page deals with both the First Minister of Northern Ireland and the Deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland (or should that be 'Deputy-Frist'?). It's a joint office, one cannot do anything from sending a letter up without the approval of the other, so an OFMDFM page would be much more accuarte. I would suggest that it is Office of the First Minister and Deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland perhaps?Traditional unionist 23:44, 7 April 2007 (UTC)

I don't think we would need the '...of Northern Ireland', as the article Office of the First Minister and Deputy First Minister isn't taken by any other country, just like there is no other Department of Finance and Personnel. This department is no longer Office of the First Minister and Deputy First Minister but it's now Office of the First Minister and deputy First Minister (note change from Deputy to deputy) so therefore the article need to be moved.--Nanometre (talk) 00:15, 25 April 2008 (UTC)

No there is. In the other devolved UK administrations there isn't in statute, but in Northern Ireland the deputy First Minister is mentioned in the Northern Ireland Act 1998. It is an equal office but the phrase deputy First Minister is to distinguish the smaller designation post from the bigger designation post (First Minister).--Nanometre (talk) 13:09, 26 April 2008 (UTC)

I know however the 2 pages is more beneficial because some issues only relate to each position exclusively such as the Deputy/deputy issue, DUP want First Minister to have more power, Ian Paisley refers wrongly to Martin McGuinness as "my deputy", what the incumbents think of their role and how they use it, comparative differences in past and present First Ministers/deputy First Ministers etc. Also it is a diarchy, but in statute they are different posts.--Nanometre (talk) 18:18, 26 April 2008 (UTC)

Surely, like the distinction made between the Home Office and the Home Secretary, there should be a distinction between OFMDFM and the First Minister of Northern Ireland/deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland. Merging the First Minister of Northern Ireland and deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland pages into a First Minister and deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland page might be a good way of solving this issue.--Nanometre (talk) 18:35, 26 April 2008 (UTC)

Having a separate page for OFMDFM is a bit excessive. The Home Office has existed for hundreds of years in various guises, OFMDFM has existed on and off for 10.Traditional unionist (talk) 19:56, 27 April 2008 (UTC)

Arlene Foster

I have removed Arlene Foster from the list of First Ministers. In 2001 David Trimble resigned and designated Reg Empey as his acting successor. In 2010 Peter Robinson did not resign. Arlene Foster described her role in that period as being to filfil the "mundane" and "routine" duties of the office rather than as the acting First Minister. She was described as "fulfiling the functions of First Minister" rather than "Acting First Minister". Therefore it is not proper to include her in the list of First Ministers.Traditional unionist (talk) 17:27, 22 March 2010 (UTC)
