I suspect he had at least a CBE, judging by [1] but I can't verify this so I haven't added for the moment.Alci12 18:05, 3 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

He went to Trinity College, Cambridge not Oxford. Other websites have this mistake as well but see Oxford Dictionary of National Biography for correct details. Also title for Beyond Top Secret Ultra aka Beyond Top Secret U was incomplete.

Btw his OBE (1944) was advanced to CBE in 1950.

Date of birth

edit

The date 19 March 1901 has been there since almost the inception of the article. Can this be confirmed? His IMDB entry says it was on 29 March. -- JackofOz (talk) 01:49, 17 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Judicial Appointment

edit

Can it be confirmed what precisely his judicial appointment was in Hampshire? Prior to the Courts Act 1971, County Quarter Sessions were presided over by a barrister (sometimes a County Court or High Court judge: occasionally even an appellate judge), chairing a bench of magistrates, and Borough Quarter Sessions (i.e. for Boroughs which had the privilege of holding their own sessions) were held before a Recorder, sitting alone (who seems usually to have been a barrister rather than a judge). If Ewen Montagu had been appointed to Hampshire, he would have been styled 'Chairman of Quarter Sessions'; if to one of the Boroughs within Hampshire which held their own Quarter Sessions (Andover, Bournemouth, Portsmouth, Southampton or Winchester) then he would have been styled a 'Recorder'.Ntmr (talk) 01:03, 16 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

KC instead of QC

edit

The post-nominal should have been KC instead of QC, I have made an edit to that effect.

When he took silk, the UK had a King, therefore KC. Furthermore, last time I checked Charles III was a King, so even by modern standards (which post nominals do not follow), it should be KC. 128.151.150.25 (talk) 21:59, 18 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

I fear your thinking is amiss. True, there was a king when he took silk, so he was initially a KC. Then George VI died and Elizabeth II became monarch, so all KCs automatically became QCs. He died in 1985, while Elizabeth was still reigning, so he remains QC forever. We don't keep on changing dead silks' postnominals every time there's a change of monarchical sex. That happens only for live silks. So, Montague was a KC who became a QC, end of story. -- Jack of Oz [pleasantries] 02:57, 19 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
