National Secular Society/Council of Christians and Jews
editA member of the National Secular Society, and a treasurer of the Council of Christians and Jews.
Please, how can one be both an athiest, and part of a religous council that seeks to determine how an individual should read, view, and define scripture in their life? Should one read the holy inspired books of Moses, Isaiah and John that unveil Gods full dimensions, a path of knowledge, comfort and salvation. Or, should one email the National Secular Society first, and ask which particular portions of Gods word to ommit such as not to give offence to their fragile sensibilities.

- Easy. The Council of Christians and Jews is not a "religous council". It's about combatting anti-semitism. Flapdragon 13:08, 12 February 2006 (UTC)
- A somewhat belated addition, but anyway: membership of the National Secular Society most definitely does not require one to be atheist or even agnostic. The aim of the NSS is not to annihilate religion but to remove it from politics. WombatDeath (talk) 23:58, 5 December 2007 (UTC)
Thank you, I checked the link. Seems to be a lot of "religious" people involved. Archbishop of Cantebury, Cardinal of Westminster, the Queen is the patron!! If it isn't a "religious council" why is it called the "Council of Christians and Jews"?

God Save The Queen - Early Day Motion number 1319
editThis man is famous for his Early Day Motion. Maybe we should add this as trivia? According to wiki God_Save_the_Queen:
In April 2007 there was an Early Day Motion, number 1319, to the UK Parliament to propose that there should be a separate England anthem: "That this House ... believes that all English sporting associations should adopt an appropriate song that English sportsmen and women, and the English public, would favour when competing as England". An amendment (EDM 1319A3) was proposed by Evan Harris that the song "should have a bit more oomph than God Save the Queen and should also not involve God."

'Doctor' Harris
editI understand he completed medical school, but did he ever actually complete his House training, or pass his MRCP exam? The man seems to take a lot of mileage out of being a doctor, and legally, as he completed medical school, he is allowed to call himself one, but without his exam he is not allowed to see patients outside hospital employment, which he no longer has. Interestingly he and his campaign refuse to answer this question or deal with the issue. Does anybody know just how much of a 'Doctor' he really is? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.159.77.157 (talk) 12:42, 24 January 2010 (UTC)
He was a Senior House Officer at the John Radcliffe. Is that enough of a Doctor for you? Tsuguya (talk) 11:27, 8 May 2010 (UTC)
Thank you for proving my point. He was a Senior House Officer, which dispite its fancy sounding name, actually means a junior student doctor undergoing training in a speciality. In fact in the UK Doctors are not allowed to practice medicine independently until they finish their house Jobs, which unless I am mistaken, Dr Harris never did. Thus, I reiterate my original question: is Dr harris in fact not just someone who completed medical school and then never finished his residency? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 152.152.95.1 (talk) 09:49, 17 May 2010 (UTC)
Our anonymous critic could have proved his/her own point by simply reading the relevant section of the article, which gives plenty of detail about Dr Harris' medical training. It would be interesting to see examples of Harris taking "a lot of mileage out of being a doctor" or refusing "to answer this question". Without examples this looks like simple mud-slinging. Ewen (talk) 10:46, 17 May 2010 (UTC)
With respect, the 'relevant section' of the article is completely misleading. The phrase: "A year later, he moved to the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, specialising in acute medicine and surgery", implies he moved to practice, when in fact he was still doing his residency and had not even reached the stage where he was allowed to practice. This is factual, not mudslinging. I cannot provide evidence of him refusing to answer the question, as to my knowledge the hustings are not taped, and lack of answer to an email is unprovable. I can, however, easily provide many examples of his attempting to get a 'lot of mileage out of being a doctor', if they care. Having failed to complete his House Jobs, Harris is not even liscenced to practice medicine. If this is the case, then I hardly think pointing this fact out qualifies as 'mudslinging'. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 152.152.95.1 (talk) 09:02, 18 May 2010 (UTC)
I don't see what's "completely misleading" when the article says his most recent medical position is "honorary specialist registrar". Ewen (talk) 09:49, 18 May 2010 (UTC)
'Tragic' death
editWith all due respect, we don't need to say that someone 'tragically' died, do we? Ewen (talk) 15:44, 10 May 2010 (UTC)
Evan Harris website vanished
edithttp://evanharris.org.uk appears to have gone defunct in July.
Links perhaps need removing? I'll leave it to regulars as I just surfed in. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 217.43.218.100 (talk) 17:02, 9 September 2011 (UTC)
- I'm sorry that nobody did anything for a whole year. You're right, the link now redirects to [1] so I've removed it from the infobox. Thanks for your help. --Six words (talk) 16:12, 15 September 2012 (UTC)
There is an RfC on the question of using "Religion: None" vs. "Religion: None (atheist)" in the infobox on this and other similar pages.
The RfC is at Template talk:Infobox person#RfC: Religion infobox entries for individuals that have no religion.
Please help us determine consensus on this issue. --Guy Macon (talk) 20:29, 23 April 2015 (UTC)
