What was it called in Soviet times? Michael Z. 2006-01-31 06:04 Z

Several. The most recent Soviet name was "Ploscha Leninskoho Komsomolu" (Lenin's Komsomol square, or of "Lenin's Young Communist league"). Prior to that it was Stalin square, prior to that of the "Third International's square". Before the revolution it was "Tsars'ka" (perhaps "Trarskaya" or "Trar's") due to the monument to Alexander II of Russia erected there and the square was commonly called "Aleksandrovskaya" as well. Before that it was "Yevropeyska(ya)" again due to the "Yevropeysky Hotel" built by the architect Beretti. Before that it was "Teatralna(ya)" due to the theater built there by architect A. Melensky. Finally in early-19th century it was the "Kinna" or "Konnaya" (Horse square) because it was a location of horse trade fairs.
This stings of names is DYKable, I am sure, but I won't have time today :(. To refresh and add to my memories I used the link I added to the article (only UA/RU links versions for this square have some info, English is just and entry). The link also has some vintage photos. I also checked this article from the Russian magazine already listed in the links list to Khreschatyk. Some info is also here at the wiki-encyclopedia of Kiev (in Ukrainian). If anyone has time to develop it for DYK, please do. 72 hours is ticking. I will try my best later, but can't guarantee I will have time. Thanks for creating an article. --Irpen 06:25, 31 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

What would be better, the Yevropeyska Square or the European Square? I like the latter better, seems more elegant but I thought I just bring this up and leave it up to others. --Irpen 06:44, 31 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

It should better be European Square. First, this way it would be more clearly recognized by English-only readers. Second, it's the way the square is called by the Ukrainian authorities; see [1]. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 192.245.119.175 (talkcontribs) 03:13, 1 February 2006 (UTC)

OK. I am moving it then. We can move it back if we are later swayed to change our mind. There will be no artificial histories, to it will move just fine. --Irpen 15:18, 1 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Just a small point, most English-speakers call it Europe Square - this is the formulation most often used in English for such places. 178.177.35.115 (talk) 08:12, 6 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
