official denomination?

The article starts with the line: "A member of the European Commission, also called (incorrectly) a European Commissioner ...". The article itself is entitled "European Commissioner".

Does this mean we are using an incorrect term for the title? If so, what would be the correct term?

Perhaps A member of the European Commission needs to be bolded too, and incorrectly to be substituted by informally. However, this is just my guess. Any opinions? Tomeasy _{T C} 11:47, 7 February 2010 (UTC)

As far as I am aware, the only term in use, official or otherwise, is European Commissioner. "Member of the European Commission" is a term that was hanging around on these pages before I started editing, apparently as an old legal term for it - perhaps it was in the older treaties or something? Along with the abbreviation CEC for Commission of the European Communities - something that was once legal but now unheard of due to changes in the treaties and new established terminology.- _J.Logan`^t: 12:00, 7 February 2010 (UTC)

This website by the Commission uses the term Commissioners to refer to its members. So, I think your bold move on the article itself was correct. We can simply start with "A European Commissioner is ...". Tomeasy _{T C} 13:26, 7 February 2010 (UTC)

And the EC English Style Guide says "16.2 Titles of Members. The word Commissioner should not be used in legal texts but is acceptable in other less formal, journalistic-type texts, such as press releases and especially headlines (where the more formal designations sound stilted." The term "college" is the correct technical term for the body of the 28 "commissioners". It avoids the ambiguity of the word "Commission", which may refer to the whole institution, including the civil servants. --Boson (talk) 16:30, 17 August 2013 (UTC)
