Should this article be in the Catholic Church in Hungary category? The basilica and the archdiocese are already included. Alensha 22:33, 17 Jun 2005 (UTC)

You are right; it needn't and shouldn't. I'll remove it. --Adam78 23:02, 17 Jun 2005 (UTC)

The article is very informative however it seems to have been written as if it's a descriptive text for the Hungarian, e.g. "... yet devastating siege by the walls of the Vłíziváros Balassa Bálint died in action, who was the first poet of our Hungarian lyre who gained European significance..."

Though the city is in Hungary and there is no current Ottoman (or Turkish) claims (which would be funny, anyway), I don't think we can use the "liberation" for Hungarian reconquest of the city. Please consider it as a style issue rather than NPOV one. Turanyuksel 14:12, 20 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

There are many POV statements in the article, especially anti-Turkish ones. Plus, there are weird statements like "In 1543 Sultan Suleiman I attacked the castle with an enormous army and countless cannons." This article should be re-written in a more Wiki way. --212.31.0.50 13:02, 18 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

citations? edit

There are claims in the article such as -Turks killed people, destroyed all buildings, etc. Do you have basis for those claims? Or is it the infame of the name "Turk". I know the last Ottoman Turkish governor's grave in Hungary, written to his tomb by Hungarians "He was a heroic enemy, may he sleep in peace". And I don't think they would write such a thing for a representative of such tyranny as claimed in the article the Turks are. Respect.. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 85.101.10.137 (talk) 16:57, 11 February 2007 (UTC).Reply

Respect??? The Türks annihilated the entire Pilis Mountain region. Those, who haven't been killed were taken to slavery, young boys and girls sold as sex slaves. You recon we should RESPECT them???? As a result, the Hapsburgs re-populated the empty villages with Slovaks and Austrians. Even today, most villages are 100% Slovaks. And I do have the evidence: look at the village-name-signs on the road. Always displayed in TWO languages where the population is mixed. Besides, the devastation is a historical fact. If you are from one of those 'western coutries' be thankful that we stopped them and thus saved your country from the same devastation. To return the favor, your 'western civilization' helped to carve up and further destroy Hungary. Now you will have to face them without us. Read the German news. Good luck. We are not racist but know your limit and don't ask us to respect a country who devastated ours.

Actually the 140 years of WAR resulted in destroying almost the entire city, not the Turks by themselves. Hungarians took back the city a couple of times, and in a couple of months/years the Turks would allways take it back from the Christian forces. The constant war and bombardment killed almost everyone in the city and destroyed many buildings. According to a census of the time, Esztergom (and surrounding Esztergom county) was almost unpopulated by the end of the Turkish occupation. The Turks didn't destroy buildings, only statues of Christian saints in various churches, mostly in the St. Adalbert Church. They actually built spas, reinforced the castle etc. (By the way: I noticed that this article is a word-by word translation of a Hungarian book of Esztergom, but I can't find it right now, but I'm sure I read this exact text in Hungarian somewhere.) Ok, I've got it! this is an exact translation of the city's history section on esztergom.hu!!! (since then few parts of the text were changed here) I knew this was familiar from somewhere http://www.esztergom.hu/wps/portal//varos?docid=ADMR-6WQKVH (HUN)Villy 14:10, 24 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

As a copy-vio, the history text should either be drastically rewritten or started anew. Olessi 18:01, 24 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Bridge edit

Why was the Maria Valeria Bridge only reconstructed in 2001? Was the relations between Slovakia and Hungary so bad as to not want a bridge in that interim period?

Yes, and Esztergom was a clerical city, so it did not receive any support from the communist/socialist Hungarian government. It would of been suicide to even mention the reconstruction of the bridge in a time when the county seat was moved from Esztergom to a little mining-town. And they say that the Slovak politicans were affraid that this would further streighten the bond between Hungarians in the two countries. This proved to be true, I mean about the relations of the two cities. (HUN)Villy 22:34, 29 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Early history edit

Since 500 AD until 900 AD the town was one of important places in the kingdom of Great Moravia.

Also, there is possibility that the name has Slavic root "streg" = to guard. It would be the similar etymology as Polish town Strzegom near Polish/Bohemian border. Slavic "Stregom" = "I guard". Stregom -> Stergom (Hungarian change). Then with Hungarian "a" + "Stergom" -> Astergom or Estergom (Esztergom).--84.16.60.39 (talk) 16:54, 30 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Esztergom Castle Folk Song in Turkish (Estergon Kalesi) edit

A modern version of the old Turkish folk song Estergon Kal'ası (Esztergom Castle), which was probably first sung by a Turkish warrior-bard:

Etymology - Ister + Gam edit

Hi Fakirbakir, the theory about the origin in "Ister" + "Gam" has been unsourced (at least) for 7 years and the "unsourced" tag dates back to January 2017. If you want to add it again, add reliable scholar source. It would be also good to clarify if this opinion is supported by some modern linguist because there are also opinions or modern linguists.--Ditinili (talk) 05:28, 28 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

I'm gonna get some sources. Fakirbakir (talk) 09:17, 28 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. Add.: Ostar-ringun - the cited book was published in 1910 (118 years ago). I suggest to cite modern sources or to remove it as an outdated theory.--Ditinili (talk) 12:00, 28 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
