IPA Pronunciation

Surely we should be using Mexican Spanish in the pronunciation of this stadium? We do not say 'Athteca'; we say, 'Asteca' in Mexico, the US, and the rest of Latin America. I know that's how it would be pronounced in most parts of Spain, but this is not a Spanish stadium; it's a Mexican stadium. Thoughts? ericxpenner (talk) 04:18, 17 April 2011 (UTC)

I completely agree with you. Maybe the article can show the IPA Pronunciation in Mexican Spanish, and state "Mexican Spanish Pronunciation" instead of "Spanish Pronunciation". I think that Wikipedia's (or at least, English-language Wikipedia's) IPA Spanish rules require that articles regarding Spanish-language place-names show only Spain's pronunciation. But aside from this being a silly policy regarding place-names in Mexico, it's also a double standard. The articles for Birmingham, UK, and Birmingham, USA (Alabama) each show the local IPA pronunciations (British English and American English respectively). Ditto with York, UK and New York (state), USA. Why not make the same distinction between Mexican Spanish and Spain Spanish? (talk) 06:25, 17 September 2011 (UTC)

Estadio Azteca is the largest soccer stadium in the world

This article was recently edited to say that the Azteca is the largest stadium in the world, after which at first I thought it meant in terms of capacity (since the capacity of the Maracanã has been reduced), but according to this encyclopedia the Largest stadium in capacity is the Rungnado May Day Stadium (see Stadiums by capacity) . Then I checked on actual building size terms, and according to http://www.suderj.rj.gov.br/maracana/main.asp, the Maracana has a building area of 118.458,88 m², much larger than the area of the Azteca, 61,242 m², according to this source (for lack of a better one). I believe both figures refer to building area only, not counting the playing field or site features (parking, etc.).

Due to the above, I reverted to the previous source until referenced otherwise.

I do find, however, very interesting to find and add this kind of information to the articles on stadiums, either within the article or as infobox data.--ChaChaFut 23:24, 16 August 2006 (UTC)

Nowadays, the Aztec stadium is the largest soccer stadium in terms of capacity in the world. There are, however, other different purpose stadiums in the world with a much larger capacity than the aztec stadium (see http://www.worldstadiums.com/stadium_menu/stadium_list/100000.shtml).

Size disagreement

The pages for Club America and Atlante have a different (higher, 126,260) capacity for Azteca than the Azteca page does (114,600).

The stadium had an original estimated seating of approx. 121,000. There have been major modifications to the stadium, like adding private boxes in the lower section, expanding the press box in the upper section, adding a Freedom restaurant where the honorary box used to be, and finally the addition of two Jumbotron screens. All these changes reduced the capacity to approx. 104,000.

Stadium Naming

I do not have the information at this moment, and have not verified it, but I think it is actually true: The Estadio Azteca never had that name as the official one! It was named something like Estadio de la Federacion Mexicana de Futbol (Mexican Football Federation Stadium) when it was built, but after a famous TV host referred to it as the "Estadio Azteca" as some kind of joke, the nickname stood long enough to get called like that (much like how the "Tepito" neighborhood got its name). -- danixdefcon5 04:02, 4 October 2006 (UTC)

"Estadio Azteca" is the name the stadium is overwhelmingly known by, so even if the above happens to be true it would only warrant a mention in the article. Interesting trivia, though. -- Rune Welsh | ταλκ 09:21, 4 October 2006 (UTC)

I agree with Rune.welsh, however if you feel inclined you might do some research on the topic; I'm quite certain you could find mentions to this name in online newspapers during the period where the whole "Guillermo Cañedo" fiasco happened, as it was pretty controversial and there was a lot of talk about the stadium's naming and origins. There is a huge plaque that reads "Monumental Estadio Azteca", dated on the 29th of May of 1966, right in a huge wall in the base of the stadium, readible by anyone. Make no mistake. The Estadio Azteca has been named like that since its conception.

Capacity

I am very disappointed about not having more specific architectural and planning information on the different seating sections that the stadium has, how many private boxes are available, how many journalists can it hosts in an important match, and how many cars can be parked at its parking lots. I care more about how many people can watch a game from the the Platea Baja section than when did Michael Jackson sobbed in the place.

Azteca never have had many standings but there were a few in "the old days", and I belive that both WC-finals had an attendence of above 115.000.

Question: in enlish language "a host" is correct (?) but shall the "verbinization" of this noun be spelled "hosted" or "hoasted" ? I'm from Sweden and english at "an academical level" is a bit difficult, allthow I for instance can watch "Midsomer murders", "DCI Morse" and even the scottish "Taggart" with no problem at all (whithout underlining), and I can have a normal conversation in english without any problems. Reading is neighther a problem - but the optional grammar, choice of words in a text (like "perhaps" or "maybe") and spelling of some words is more difficult. I've also seen the same word been spelled diffrently - like "colour" and "color". But please correct mis-spellings in the article. (I've extended the first part with some more facts) /John Pontus

hand of god vs. god's hand and "colossus of" versus "'s colossus"

Hi. First of all I restored the reference to the pope's visit in 1999; the previous phrasing about it being "most remembered by mexicans" is perhaps religiously slanted, but it certainly doesn't warrant removing mention of the visit altogether. The new phrasing is more neutral, as well as sourced, so please feel free to improve on the writing, but keep from deleting facts from the article.

The "hand of god" goal is widely known as such, and it even links to the article about this famous sports feat. Changing it to "god's hand goal" disrupted the link so, regardless of the grammatical merits of one translation versus the other, I changed it back to the more accepted name for the goal.

Finally, "santa ursula's colossus" sounds horrible; also, calling it "colossus of" is more in tune with, for instance, the Colossus of Rhodes; and indeed this is the nickname's purported meaning.

Naming

Do we refer to Estadio Monumental Antonio V. Liberti as "The monumental stadium of Antonio V. Liberti?" La Bonbonera as "The chocolate box?"
