Decline

fork!!! could we please get some info on the decline and why they are near extinction!!?? there's nothing there atm- nada!. I'm not using my wikipedia account atm (user:kotare) but when I get back on I'll try to remedy this sorry state of affairs. My understanding of the matter is that they were hunted for food on a vast scale in the US in a similar scenario to the extinction of the passenger pigeon. Consistent tense?

I know it's difficult to know whether to write about this bird in the past or present tense, because it may or may not be extinct; but the article should treat it one way or the other, not both. At the moment there is at least one sentence that uses both past and present tenses! Somebody more knowledgeable than I should decide whether to treat the bird as extinct or not, and then make the article consistent, one way or the other. • I think it would be reasonable to follow the lead of the IUCN on this; as long as they are listing it as Critically Endangered, we refer to the bird in the present tense. We can switch to pass tense the moment it is officially classified as Extinct. Captain Sumo (talk) 11:04, 27 March 2017 (UTC)

Okay, the sources are not totally consistent in this, so my inclination is to just say something like "The last unambiguous record is the bird shot in the Barbados in '63, but there have been a few dozen reported sight records since then" without trying to be too specific on the details because which sight reports are mentioned by which authorities and how they're evaluated is a bit of random bag, other than maybe to note the largest (23 birds in Texas), and the most recent (Nova Scotia in '06), both of which can be reasonably cited to publications. Hunting prohibition

It says that hunting was banned in 1912, but where exactly was that the case? Just in the US? In a couple of South American countries? Worldwide? Kelvinnkat (talk) 16:12, 28 August 2023 (UTC)
