Future use of the tunnel as a roadway?

edit

This is slightly off topic for the Talk page, however does anyone know if regional authorities have considered clearing out the debris, installing proper ceiling reinforcements (without the expense of widening the tunnel) and then using it for vehicular traffic with flow control -that is using it in one direction for a fifteen minute period, and then the opposite direction for the next fifteen mins.... etc... ? Any studies or articles on such a proposal? Best: HarryZilber (talk) 21:58, 4 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

As you can see in the aftermath section, the Spanish Government commissioned a feasibility study to build a road. I guess they considered the option you describe but the study is not published online. I also wonder if the investment would be justified, even for a single lane, as the area is sparsely populated. Even tough there are still some politicians requesting the completion of the tunnel (see link in Spanish), most people consider it a dead project with no future. Just a few days ago, a Cantabria politician said he wouldn't allow the works on a highway in the Cantabria region to become the "new Engaña Tunnel". (see link in Spanish) Although some adventurers still cross the tunnel nowadays, the structure is falling apart (see this photo from the gallery in the External Links section). Thank you for pointing out the photos, which are very interesting. Yes, the region is obviously sparsely populated, so I can see that the regional governments have little incentive in putting additional money into the project. But perhaps the region will become more populous in the future, at which time the tunnel may no longer be rehabilitated. Its unfortunate the original designers chose not to use reenforcing steel when they built it. HarryZilber (talk) 04:50, 5 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Can someone translate the titles of the references into English? I added the |trans_title= in the citation templates, but since I don't speak Spanish, I'm not qualified to make the translations. Second request, but the ALL CAPS titles in Spanish should be converted to Sentence case to match the other citations. The last suggestion I have is to switch from |author= to |last= |first= in the citations to place the authors into Last, First order, which is the norm for citations in English. Otherwise, the article, now that I placed the missing conversions, looks good. There's some overlinking of common words and repeated linking as well, but nicely done. Done. One of the titles was "perdió su norte" ("lost its North" in Spanish) but I translated it as "lost its bearing", which might be closer translation to the original title. Drunt (talk) 20:00, 8 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
