Quote: "Emile Heskey made footballing history in 1997 when he became the 1st black player ever."

Imagine the fun people at the Guardian would have with this sentence. There could be a competition for completing that sentence. Or did they vandalize this page already? There was something about this on the podcast. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.225.172.40 (talk) 01:43, 22 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Quote: Many people believe that Emile is the worlds best targetman for long balls and throughout his career he has proved this, with endless head downs to his strike partners. It has been acknowledged by many that Emile is considered to be a cross between Jan Koller and Pele.

I think I've got reasonable grounds to delete that without asking. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.17.202.62 (talk) 21:44, 10 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

GA review

edit

It looks good so far, just a few tweaks are needed:

  • Leads is too small. I wouldn't mind a third paragraph. A little suggestion: Try and expand on his international career in the lead, I don't think a sentence really efficient - Try and expand on facts like who he made his debut against and why was he dropped from the England team (Poor performances? International retirement?)
  Done Expanded. Mattythewhite 18:47, 4 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
  • Leicester City section is worryingly small considering he spent the longest there.
  Done Expanded. Mattythewhite 18:09, 4 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
  • Also, although this isn't really your fault, but surely his £11 million move isn't any longer a club record is it, considering Mr. Torres.
  Done Sorted out. Mattythewhite 18:10, 4 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, but shouldn't you include the fact that Torres is the current record holder then? Sorry, it kinda leaves a relevant gap in the article. Interestly you could also use the succession box and the {{s-record}} if you can find the previous record holder before Heskey, have a look at Nico Rosberg's succession boxes for a better idea. --Phill talk Edits Review this GA review! 21:15, 4 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

  • A few specifics with the Wigan section - "Heskey was signed by Wigan Athletic for £5.5m during the summer of 2006." yes? And who did he make his debut against?
  Done Debut mentioned. Mattythewhite 18:22, 4 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
  • In the clubs stats section, could you add a note saying how up to date the table is - to avoid anyone in future inaccuracies.
  Done Mattythewhite 17:01, 4 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
  • Did Heskey have any individual honours?
I don't believe so. Mattythewhite 18:39, 4 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Anyway, I do realise this is just for Good Article status, but still several sections will need major "beefing up" if you want to take this article beyond GA. But apart from that, it's still a nice article. --Phill talk Edits Review this GA review! 16:56, 4 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Cheers for seeing to those problems, I'll now pass this article as a GA. A few things you could do in the future is of course expand a few sections, not only that but have a section on his personal and early life would be good as well. I'm also sure you know the drill as well Matty, see my sig for a "subtle" reminder. --Phill talk Edits Review this GA review! 09:31, 5 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
Having read the article - there are some bits that repeat, and other bits (whilst cited) don't give both sides of the argument. For instance his "Strength" should and probably could be cross referenced with his ability to fall over at a touch.--Koncorde 23:01, 13 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
suggestion for addition to page - Emile's goal in the 5-1 win by England v Germany on 1 September 2001 in World Cup qualifying, in Munich. Not only was this match described (by the BBC) as poossibly England's finest ever (arguable, but certainly very significant in rescuing a failing qualifying campaign and setting a record for the biggest defeat of a major rival, but also the match was the source of an England supporters' chant still used today "Five-one, even Heskey scored" in a would-be humorous reference to Heskey's perceived inability to score goals. I'm surprised this is not part of an otherwise very thorough article.THe IRB (talk) 23:43, 25 September 2012 (UTC) (THe_IRB)26 Sep 2012Reply

Style of play

edit

(moved recent comments relating to Style of play all together to avoid confusion)

I'm sorry why should this be included in the article? I don't see Steven Gerrard's style of play mentioned in his article or Frank Lampard's in his article. So why should a lesser player? Also a pacy forward what the hell? Deleted. 81.47.151.9 (talk)

I'd also like to point out that the sources that have been quoted are several years old. They may no longer reflect Heskey's capability. You've heard of Heskey being in his prime well yes that did happen but that has also happened to Gianfranco Zola at one point he was called the world's best player but after he left Chelsea he was no longer in that category. I personally think it ought to be deleted. 83.104.51.181 (talk) 14:23, 29 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

  • Style of Play I know that there has been much debate over this. Give me a valid reason as to why it is on the article and why other player's don't have something like this? The sources are years old one dating back I think to 2001 we can't quote news from 2001 and claim it is the current news yet that is what this article is representing. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.104.51.181 (talk) 14:30, 29 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
    • A footballer's style of play is a subject of interest to readers and an important aspect of their playing career, so it's perfectly normal to include an outline of it in articles. There are three footballer articles rated as Featured Article, Thierry Henry, Gilberto Silva and Duncan Edwards; all three have a Style of play section. Some articles rated Good Article (Joey Barton, Chris Brandon, Mark Bresciano, etc) have such a section, some don't. You make a reasonable point about the assessment of Heskey's style being from a six-year-old source; perhaps you might have a look for some more recent reliable sources for a description of the player's style, perhaps sources which might illustrate how his style has changed over time, and improve the article using those? cheers, Struway2 (talk) 15:07, 29 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Struway I appreciate what you have said. But there are no sources that would say Heskey's style of play has changed since 2001. Whoever thought that Mr. Heskey's style of play would be debated so thoroughly. Ok, I admit it a dozen or a few more football players articles have a small 'Style of Play' section. Most of these are still very relevant though and some of the player's that you mentioned are currently in their pomp and a lot younger than Mr. Heskey. Also the opening of 'Style of Play' is more or less the same as the start introduction to the article. Maybe you could make some suggestions or maybe we could come to some sort of compromise. Thanks. 83.104.51.181 (talk) 20:38, 29 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Arguable, isn't it. I'd say that of those three players with featured status articles, two are past their prime and one's dead. Whatever the class of article, or for that matter the class of footballer, a footballer's style of play ought to be discussed in their article, whether it's in a separate section or spread out over the article; if it isn't, then the article needs to be improved so that it doesn't leave out a major aspect of the player's professional career.
I did a google search on ' "Emile Heskey" pace Wigan '; including Wigan so that the results would be relatively recent. In the first ten results, I comment on these two. In this one, the Guardian writer "unexpectedly" watched "a masterclass in pace, power, movement and intelligence". In this one, the writer is happy to remind us of Heskey's giving away the free kick that resulted in England going out of Euro2004, but still mentions that "Heskey’s strengths are his pace and strength". I'm away for a couple of days, so haven't got time, but if you'd consider updating the style of play section to incorporate those recent assessments of the player's style, you'd be doing Wikipedia a favour. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 21:50, 29 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

I re-edited the whole 'Style of play' section to reflect how well Heskey did in his youth at Leicester and his £11m move to Liverpool. However I have also added harsh truths that reflect both sides of the coin. I have informed readers of how he USED to be pacy but has no lost that ability. I added that he has brought many other things to his game. All sources have been kept. I hope my work is satisfactory. 83.104.51.181 (talk) 13:55, 30 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

I'm sorry I still don't like it and I've re-edited it all myself. His style of play is being a big lump what else is there to his game? The stuuf I've added is just niceties. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.104.51.181 (talk) 17:22, 3 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

I like the style of play section but it is even more subjective than career descriptions. Certainly at Leicester City Heskey showed high levels of skill on the ground and would not have been regarded as a "blunt instrument" (THe_IRB)THe IRB (talk) 23:36, 25 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

"A man possessed"

edit

Regarding the sentence "After the match, Heskey was described as "a man possessed", after playing at the heart of the Wigan defence, a position not suited to his play" and its reference, I don't believe that the sentence is valid. Can I have a second opinion on this? (Vindicta (talk) 00:56, 19 October 2008 (UTC))Reply

Agreed - the writer has completely misread the article. I can't ascertain the reason why it was written in to the article in the first place! I'll fix it now. Sillyfolkboy (talk) 23:27, 19 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Personal life

edit

Hi, this is a warning that the personal life information in this article is much too short. Any biography that is of GA standard must have at least one well organised paragraph describing the persons life outside of their field for which they are famous or otherwise incorporate that information elsewhere in the text. This article does not provide enough information on the person in question and does not give enough context for the incidents and information that is mentioned. For an example of how such a section might look, see Brian Urlacher and for pointers on how to expand and improve the section, see this guide. If this information is not improved then this article would be unlikely to survive a Good Article Reassessment and may well be delisted in the future. Heskey goal versus Germany in England's 5-1 win on 1 September 2001 World Cup Qualifier

edit

I'm surprised that Emile's goal in this game has not been mentioned. The game has been described as possibly the England team's best ever performance. While that is arguable it was undoubtedly a major victory setting up World Cup qualification after a poor start, and represents England's biggest victory over constant rival Germany. Further, this game is the source of a popular England supporters' chant still in use today *Five-One, even Heskey scored" referring to Heskey's perceived lack of goals in a would-be humorous way. This may not be the most appropriate place to comment on the "style of play" section but 1) I think it's an interesting element of a sports entry on Wikipedia and 2)Anyone who watched Heskey regularly at Leicester would dispute that he was just a blunt instrument. In my view his levels of ball control on the ground were well developed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 109.145.34.192 (talk) 23:20, 25 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Paragraphs in lead section

edit

When the lead section of the article began with a single sentence, I could understand why someone might want to combine it with the next paragraph. WP:LAYOUT advises us to minimise the number of single-sentence paragraphs. So I added a second sentence including a brief summary of Mr Heskey's club and international career, i.e. mentioning "the notable actions or roles the person played" as per MOS:BIO#Opening paragraph bullet point 4. Now, I can't see how it makes any sense aesthetically or logically to combine that with the second (introductory early life and club career) paragraph. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 08:57, 1 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

Look at other football player articles and you can see they are usually made up of paragraphs. Your the only one that insists on having a two sentence intro.
