Elliot, South AfricaKhowa, Eastern Cape – Reliable sources regularly use the new name.

New structures, same problems for Khowa family

  • Oppose. Per WP:MPN, the new name has to have become "predominant in common global usage", and whiles determining this is complicated as the town is not primary for either Elliot or Khowa, this does not appear to have happened. In the past two months (chosen because there was no use of Khowa in the past month), I could identify three articles using Khowa in reference to the town (all the TimesLIVE articles use Khowa solely as part of a proper name, "Khowa Residents Association") with one of those three using both names, while I could identify four articles using Elliot in reference to the town, with one of those four using both names. As such, it does not appear that the name has met the requirement of being "predominant in common global usage". In response to the specific examples provided, I note they are spread over a greater period of time than my review, and do not represent a systematic look at the use of the different names. • You need to flesh out your arguments more. Do not just link to google search results. It is on you to link reliable sources. I have provided sources, you have not. Desertambition (talk) 02:06, 4 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
  • Comment Per WP:PLACEDAB, Khowa, South Africa is the preferred disambiguation. 162 etc. (talk) 17:31, 4 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose per WP:COMMONNAME. -- Necrothesp (talk) 13:47, 5 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
    • You have not provided any reasoning or sources. Can you expand on your thoughts and problems with my sources? To editor Necrothesp: Desertambition (talk) 22:33, 5 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose per WP:PLACEDAB. Proposed name is not in line with aforementioned guideline. --Spekkios (talk) 22:50, 5 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
    • Spekkios It's frustrating that none of you provide sources and reasoning because this is the WP:COMMONAME. The denial of facts here and on every other article about renamed South African places is unbelievable and unreasonable. Spekkios, you understand how contentious this is. Please provide detailed objections with sources. If you just oppose the name change because of disambiguation then you should say that. Would you support the name change if the disambiguation was fixed? Desertambition (talk) 22:14, 6 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose per WP:COMMONNAME. It is difficult to do a search for "Elliot" because it is such a common word in English, but a Google News search for Khowa, Eastern Cape was most instructive. Of the 10 search results, 5 were from DispatchLive and are behind a paywall (though one of these showed that DispatchLive used Khowa[1]). Of the other 5: 1 used Elliot only,[2] 3 used Elliot and Khowa[3][4][5], and 1 used Khowa only[6]. So it is clear that both names are in current use, though it is hard to say which name is more common from a search for Khowa.-- Toddy1 (talk) 15:55, 8 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
