The "Controversy" section of this page was edited in a very misleading way soon after a Washington Post story was printed about Engel. Although the story merely stated that OCE had conducted a review and that it anticipated terminating its investigation in the near term, the edit stated that OCE found that "allegations were totally unfounded." In fact, the Washington Post article attributes this quote to Engel himself. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.185.147.210 (talk) 18:51, 8 November 2009 (UTC)

'Visibility at State of the Union Addresses'

This might be interesting, but is it really a controversy? Is it even important or relevant? It seems to me more like an amusing quirk than a significant controversy, and I'm not sure we need to include it. Robofish (talk) 11:59, 2 March 2011 (UTC)

controversy

This man has made controversial statements such as suggesting that the United States arm the opposition in Syria. I think this should be added. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.71.17.180 (talk) 16:49, 13 July 2013 (UTC)

Comments regarding George Floyd

I had added a mention of Engel's June "hot mic" flub to the controversy section. An IP censored/pulled this, adn there were several subsequent edits that landed on "Engel was caught on a hot mic at a press conference with Bronx borough president Ruben Diaz Jr, asking the borough president if he can speak; Diaz Jr replied with a no, then Engel responding saying that "if [he] didn't have a primary, [he] wouldn't care" about speaking. Although for some, most of the press (especially opponent backers), it was caught as a misunderstanding about the ongoing George Floyd protests in New York City."

This last line is confusing, biased, and unnecessary. First, the press conference was explicitly about the protests. All of the sources indicated this. Second, there is no need for us to speculate on what Engel was referring to, or to comment on other's speculation (or inject our opinion that it is "a misunderstanding"). The context provided clearly indicates that he wanted to speak, was told he could not, and the quote was his reaction to that. I've restored my prior wording. New photo

The photo on this page (File:Eliot Engel, official photo portrait.jpg) is basically ancient, from 2003. Is there a newer official congressional portrait available? DemonDays64 (talk) 18:52, 13 June 2020 (UTC)

Jamaal Bowman

On the page it says he is succeeded by Jamaal Bowman even though Bowman hasn’t won the general election yet. I’m fully aware that he is most likely going to win in a safe blue district. However, he still hasn’t won yet, so I believe it’s premature to call Bowman his successor yet. I would like someone to edit this. — Preceding unsigned comment added by KRed221 (talkcontribs) 19:41, 25 June 2020 (UTC)
