Kölsch, like other varieties of Ripuarian German, has pitch accent. As is the case in North Germanic, there are two distinct tonal patterns. Because their actual phonetic realisations can vary, these are simply designated "accent 1" and "accent 2"" (German: Tonakzent 1, Tonakzent 2). See: Colognian_phonology#Tone.
