Two problems

First, the article says "There is significant number of unemployed graduates in Sri Lanka at present, except in the fields of medicine, engineering, information technology, commerce and law;" But "medicine, engineering, information technology, commerce and law" is almost everything. If all this sentence is saying is that history and art majors cannot find a job, that's pretty common.

Second, what is the language of instruction? Are universities in English? Us outsiders want to know. Kitplane01 (talk) 16:19, 28 May 2009 (UTC)

1, That is what that sentence says, albeit in a roundabout way.
Sinhala, Tamil & English are the languages of instruction. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 124.43.200.192 (talk) 15:19, 4 August 2009 (UTC)

Another issue, the total literacy rate in the current revision (97%) is higher than either the male rate (95.8%) or the female rate (93%). OmnipotentEntity (talk) 05:51, 13 December 2012 (UTC)

English Medium Schools

There is no reference made by the ministry of education regrading a category of schools called English Medium Schools there is however a category called English Medium International Schools which refers to International Schools. Therefore there is no special category called English Medium Schools prepping students for local exams. However several major national schools provide education in all three mediums (Shinhala, Tamil, English).

"In addition to the Government Schools there are 33 non-fee-levying Assisted Private Schools and 33 fee levying autonomous Private Schools. There is another category of English Medium International Schools approved and registered by the Board of Investments Sri Lanka. The number of international schools which are not controlled by the MOE has increased recently in urban areas."[1]

On-line Educational Information source Sri lanka

'''" Education in Sri Lanka "'''

Sri Lanka's population is highly educated with a literacy rate of 92%, higher than that expected for a third world country. Sri Lanka has one of the highest literacy rates of South Asia. This can mainly be attributed to the free education system in Sri Lanka. - ( source : [www.worldbank.lk] - world bank report )

" 2009 - The year of English and ICT " 2009 year has been declared as the year of English and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) education in order to improve and enhance the skills in Sri Lanka. In order to achieve these objectives government has initiated various programmes around the country to offer access to even those in the rural areas to gain the maximum advantages. ICT has been introduced as a subject for the G.C.E O/L examination. Measures are due to be taken to introduce ICT as a subject for the G.C.E. A/L from 2009 onwards. - ( source: [[[2]]]

" Limited Opportunities to explore their posibilities " According to the statistics, The students from rural areas do not have enough facilities to get information of their required Courses and study programes. To fullfil the gap of Information flow, there are several major Educational Exhibitions helding through the year to make an awareness, with the participation of hundreds of local and International educational Institutions. Even organising successful Educational Fairs basically in Colombo,Kandy and other main cities of the Island, still there are most of rural students facing some difficulties to visit those exhibitions and they are unable to explore their possibilities, to get the relevant details. Due to the lack of information, they are failing to pursue their dreams as they expected.

" Need of a Educational Information Hub " World wide Inter-net Technology is providing a world wide information, brings the World to your finger tips, where any one can get any of information in any time…as per the "Global Village" concept. Unfotunately the rural student does not have a enough facilities to access the Internet. Even most of them are having an access to the internet at Net cafes, Class rooms , computer labs and from libraries ….But the internet browsing time is limited for few minutes….due to the fixed day time Schedule. There should have a on-line space in order to provide all required information in a simple manner. It should be completely categorised and fully indexed in a convinent way of a user friendly Environment.

All students and their Parents can get advices, experienced knowledge on their education matters from Educators, Teachers, Consultants ,Institutions ,Parents and experts of all over the world ,just before to make their lifetime decision. Also that Students can access their required Information in a well organised, updated, accurate and user friendly environment, We have build-up a quality platform to maximize Student's efficiency and to explore all new global learning opportunities as they desired.

Discrimination Based on School in Sri Lanka

Please add a section called "Discrimination Based on School in Sri Lanka". In Sri Lanka there is an ongoing systematic discrimination based on the attended school. The teachers/human resources, faculties and even job opportunities are regulated by the school which the student attend. Even though there is an equal access to university, the educational facilities can varies from extremely good to extremely poor. For example, the elite schools such as Royal College, get most of facilities, textbooks, and teachers compare to other schools in Sri Lanka. When applying for a job, if two or more people apply for the same job with exact qualifications, it is more likely to a former Royal College student will get the job opportunity than a former Ananda College student. This is a systematic discrimination that act almost like the caste system in India.

Please find some information on rights violation and discrimination related to Education in Sri Lanka and post such information here. Even on this website it read: "However, the established schools who had their origins in the colonial era dominate social life in Sri Lanka mainly due the network of old boys and old girls." Which in other words, discrimination based on attended school. http://www.eduscopesrilanka.com/education_history.htm
