Education for Aztecs

Hi. I have added some information in the History section about education for the Aztecs. If there is a problem or error, please feel free to correct. You can also message me if you have questions. Thanks. - Darwin Naz (talk) 23:15, 13 September 2018 (UTC)

Possible conflict of interest

"Open education is fast growing to become the dominant form of education" "Higher education, in particular, is undergoing a transition towards open education". Those are really baseless assertions. I also see a conflict of interest, for it's in the interest of Knewton to suggest that E-learning is overtaking the traditional system at a fast pace. E-education is not even close to being the dominant form of learning. Wikipedia should not run ahead. This article does not reflect today's reality, which is that very few universities provide online courses and even if they do it's only for a very small number of subjects.

Good point. I rm first sentence and tweaked the second (now first) sentence. Still needs work. Over what time frame did the "14x" growth take place? Student7 (talk) 14:49, 6 April 2014‎

Number of children vs percentage

A fragment reads "There are 73 million children,[clarification needed] mostly female children in poor families, who did not start elementary school. There are more than 200 million children, mostly females from poor families, who did not go to secondary school."

The problem is that numbers not attending are meaningless for children.

Let's say there are 8 billion people in the world. Let's say they are evenly distributed among 80 years of life giving us 100 million for each year of age. So there could be, what?, 400 million children 14-18 (age of "majority") total? Meaning that half of all children do not attend secondary school? Numbers are meaningless unless there is a total to compare. For elementary school, there would be a candidacy of 800 million students? And only 73 million did not attend school? Who knows? We need percentages or total population. Meaningless without one of the other. Student7 (talk) 23:33, 17 September 2014 (UTC)

Definition in lead

Currently the lead begins as follows:

Education in its general sense is a form of learning in which the knowledge, skills, values, beliefs and habits of a group of people are transferred from one generation to the next through storytelling, discussion, teaching, training, or research. Education may also include informal transmission of such information from one human being to another. Education frequently takes place under the guidance of others, but learners may also educate themselves (autodidactic learning).

While I understand that the phrase "is a form of learning" is an attempt to focus on the goal (learning), education is actually the process of facilitating learning, rather than the goal of the process. For example, we call someone who facilitates learning an "educator" even though the educator is not the learner.

Moreover, as has been mentioned previously on this page, education is not just transferring knowledge etc. from one generation to the next, as it can be transferred between two people of the same generation.

I propose to replace the above passage with

Education in its general sense is the process of formally or informally facilitating learning, by which knowledge, skills, values, beliefs, and habits of a group of people are transferred to other people, through storytelling, discussion, teaching, training, or research. Education frequently takes place under the guidance of educators, but learners may also educate themselves in a process called autodidactic learning.

Comments? Loraof (talk) 15:59, 6 May 2015 (UTC)

Not a big difference, but I support the new wording.

Environmental vs Genetic Factors in Educational Achievement

The article says that "Furthermore, it is likely that this trend arises due to genetic factors. As twin studies have shown, inherited traits are more important in predicting educational attainment than any environmental measures.", with a citation to https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Wendy_Johnson3/publication/7027486_Genetic_and_environmental_influences_on_academic_achievement_trajectories_during_adolescence/links/0deec5272732884fdf000000.pdf

However, that paper only looks at a few environmental factors (things like parental drug abuse) and only looks at pairs of twins living within a day's drive of Minneapolis, MN. The scope of environmental factors measured and the relatively restrictive set of environments considered don't, IMHO, support the claim that inherited factors in general outweigh environmental factors in determining educational achievement. To say that, you really need to cite a study that measures more about your environment (number of books in your house, whether you have enough to eat, whether your family speaks the same language as your school, etc.) and that covers a wider range of environments than are available within an hour's drive of Minneapolis. Remember too that the twins are being split up, so at least one family of each pair of twin families must have been cleared by an adoption agency.

Is this a case where {{Failed_verification}} should be used?

67.149.211.110 (talk) 21:41, 29 December 2015 (UTC)

This is certainly a question. I have moved the passage here for discussion and separated it into two parts:
  1. Furthermore, it is likely that this trend arises due to genetic factors. As twin studies have shown, inherited traits are more important in predicting educational attainment than any environmental measures.[1]
This seems to be distinctly weak support, as suggested above. The wording would have to be modified heavily and a review of many studies rather than a single study should in any case be used to support such a broad claim.
  2. Also, educational attainment and intelligence share more than one half of their genetic influences, suggesting the two are highly related.
No citation is given. Can we find support for this? HGilbert (talk) 03:08, 30 December 2015 (UTC)
This study on the inheritability of educational attainment might be useful, but it is a complex subject. HGilbert (talk) 03:23, 30 December 2015 (UTC)

I think I think it is wise to mention something about the difference between Education and Indoctrination. I fear both are very similar since education is indoctrination without coercion.

Many schools still force things without a real dialogue with their students. Imagine being thought how amazing your great leader is every day. Is this education? If I read the first part of the article I would come to the conclusion yes. He is great at facilitating learning, helps me with the acquisition of knowledge, skills, values, beliefs, and habits. I did not have a choice, if I wanted to learn about my great leader but I will believe after reading the article I am being educated. So to make it very clear I think its wise to add that teaching something in a forceful process makes it automatically indoctrination.

You have presented such a forceful case for this that I find myself involuntarily agreeing with you. HGilbert (talk) 13:24, 9 February 2016 (UTC)

Education

I think the article explains about education understandably, so I could understand easily. To be specific, I learned when did the education begin and why education is necessary among people in the world. However, the article will be much better if the writer talked about the education in other countries and compared to several nations. Especially, Korea is a good example of writing about because Korea is famous for the strict school system. On the other hand, America is more focus on the creativeness. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 104.174.158.130 (talk) 06:22, 18 February 2016 (UTC)

Education linked to GE "Bildung"?

Hi,
I see that in the left-side "Languages" bar, this article is linked to GE "Bildung", which is slightly different subject. The corresponding GE page would be https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ausbildung , e.g. vocational training.
Pages to link to "Bildung" would be https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Humboldtian_model_of_higher_education
(and/?) or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberal_arts_education
T 88.89.219.147 (talk) 20:51, 28 April 2016 (UTC)

There is probably no perfect translation. HGilbert (talk) 14:44, 29 April 2016 (UTC)
Hi, agreed; however, I was thinking not of renaming anything, but of linking together related content rather than unrelated content. Disregarding what "Bildung" might be in English, "Ausbilding" is still the GE page that treats of the same subject matter as "Education" in EN. I don't know if that is much of an argument, but otoh I also have a hard time finding any better, or even any argument at all, for not doing it. T 88.89.219.147 (talk) 17:36, 30 April 2016 (UTC)

Part of this page doesn't meet Wikipedia's neutral point of view standard. I refer specifically to the text in the "Purpose of Schools" section that begins with "Some claim that there is education inequality because children did not exceed the education of their parents" and ends with "The entire internet is also available to supplement these teachers and textbooks." Meteryam (talk) 18:50, 4 December 2016 (UTC)

Not done the statements are referenced to reliable sources, and, by prefixing them with "some claim", it is clear to the reader that these ideas are not universally accepted, but are sufficiently notable to merit inclusion - Arjayay (talk) 19:04, 4 December 2016 (UTC)

Purpose of education

I have removed this entire section for multiple reasons:

  1. Much of the material did not relate to the purpose of education (e.g. its discussion of inequality).
  2. The material was a series of very short paragraphs (in some cases consisting of a single sentence) on largely unrelated topics.
  3. Much of the material relied on quotes drawn from newspaper articles whose main subject was only tangentially related to the theme. Tertiary sources should be found to support broad claims and to give a backbone to the discussion. In particular, many purposes have been mooted for education, and any such section should give a broad overview of these. Clean Copytalk 21:28, 4 December 2016 (UTC)
I have begun a new section, under the Philosophy of Education, using a first tertiary source. Clean Copytalk 21:43, 4 December 2016 (UTC)

Education Is The Key To Success

"Success beyond Sacrifices" that what people says.Without education we will not be successful and we won't be able to search or seek good jobs and we won't be able to help our family or relatives for their needs. Education is free for all people wanting to continue and finish their studies. We must pursue our selves and relatives so that when we are old enough we will not regret. The schools duty is to educate people like me.. Teachers are our second parents they want as to be disciplined and to be perseverance.. They will be peoples inspiration to pursue them to get to school and don't be lazy to get to school because our parents are working so hard for our needs.. Dabbing is a modern version of dancing. Unlike the "whip", the dab has gone so viral and newer versions of the dab include: Cross dab, backwards dab, and finger dab. The dab origanally came from vine and vine is now dead (rip vine). Vine might not be dead for long though because there are rumors of a vine 2 coming out. Dabbing has changed the world, most effecting youtube stars, jake paul and logan paul. These youtubers dab in their daily vlogs, even though creater logan paul has not being updating reacently due to contreversy. Dabbing, most realeated to dabbing on the haters, has also affected rappers. Some rappers have showed them dabbing in there music videos. Humboldt

To me it is difficult to imagine an article about education without a reference to Wilhelm von Humboldt. von Humboldt's educational model goes beyond vocational training. In a letter to the Prussian king, he wrote: "There are undeniably certain kinds of knowledge that must be of a general nature and, more importantly, a certain cultivation of the mind and character that nobody can afford to be without. People obviously cannot be good craftworkers, merchants, soldiers or businessmen unless, regardless of their occupation, they are good, upstanding and – according to their condition – well-informed human beings and citizens. If this basis is laid through schooling, vocational skills are easily acquired later on, and a person is always free to move from one occupation to another, as so often happens in life."[1] My suggestion would be to add this to the article and also refer to the Humboldtian model of higher education 130.226.41.9 (talk) 13:44, 27 March 2018 (UTC)

Education in primary schools

The International Standard Classification of Education considers primary education as a single-phase where programmes are typically designed to provide fundamental reading, writing, and mathematics skills and establish a solid foundation for learning.   Not done: it's not clear what changes you want to be made. Please mention the specific changes in a "change X to Y" format and provide a reliable source if appropriate. RealAspects (talk) 11:52, 21 December 2022 (UTC)

Changes to the article

I would like to get this article a little closer to GA status and I wanted to get some feedback on what changes are needed before I get started. Since this is a main topic article, it would probably be a good idea to focus only on a very general overview of each of its sub-topics and leave intricate details to more specific articles. For example, the article currently lacks a section for educational technology but has a section for technology in developing countries. It should probably be the other way around and the section on educational technology could mention somewhere how this affects developing countries. The fact that some international conventions see education as a human right does not deserve its own section but should be mentioned somewhere else. The section on history has a lot of information on ancient history until the early modern period but almost none for afterward. Another point is that we probably don't need a full subsection on the COVID-19 pandemic. This fact could be mentioned, for example, in a sentence or two in the history section.

A further issue is that various parts of the article seem to follow no clear structure. For example, we have one section "Development goals" and somewhere later another section "Development". In this regard, one idea would be to have a section on the role of education in society. This section could include various details spread around in the section "Development", "Development goals", and "Economy". A related problem concerns the section "Unconventional forms" since it's nowhere explained what it intends to present. For example, informal learning and evidence-based learning are not unconventional when understood in a regular sense. The section "Funding in developing countries" probably needs to be removed for several reasons: it goes too much into detail, it only talks about a single study, this source seems to be unreliable, and it's a WP:CLOSEPARAPHRASE. Some topics that are missing or underrepresented are politics and policy in education as well as the sociology of education. The todo-list in our talk-page header is a little outdated but has some helpful information and possible additions.

There are more issues to be addressed but before I go too much into detail, it may be good to hear what others think about these points and what additional changes should be implemented. Phlsph7 (talk) 17:30, 9 April 2023 (UTC)

I've been working on a draft for the second half of this article, i.e. for the sections "Public schooling", "History", "Development goals", "Theory", "Economics", "Development", and "As a human right". It's still in a very crude form and can be found at User:Phlsph7/Education. Some of the main ideas are:
  • the new section "Role in society" should cover various points currently found in the sections "Economics", "Development goals", and "Development"
  • the new section "Role of institutions" should cover various points currently found in the sections "Public schooling", "Curriculum", and "As a human right"
  • the new section "Factors and barriers influencing educational success" should cover various points currently found in the sections "Intelligence", "Learning styles", and "Instruction". I've also added contents pertaining to psychological and sociological factors.
  • the section "Theory" is renamed to "Education studies" and additionally includes an overview of this academic discipline and its subfields
  • the new section "Comparative education" focuses on the comparison of educational systems around the world
  • the new section "Technology" should cover various points currently found in the section "Technology in developing countries" but generalize them to educational technologies in general
There is still a lot of work to be done and most of the drafted sections are far from finished. Feedback on the general idea of this overhaul and more specific issues would be appreciated. Phlsph7 (talk) 09:09, 19 April 2023 (UTC)
I went ahead with the main part of the proposals. It differs a little from the outline above, mainly because comparative education is now discussed in the subsection "Subfields" and not as a distinct section and because technology didn't get its own section but is discussed in the subsection "Technology and others". The changes address many issues but the main points are to leave out many overly specific details, to include important points that were missing before, and to have a clearer overall structure. In the process, many contents were moved around, some only survived in a summarized form, and various new contents were added. Some of the details that didn't fit well were moved to other articles. Please let me know if you think that some essential information was removed in the process so we can figure out a way to include it in the new version. Other feedback on how to improve the new sections is also welcome. Some passages in the new sections have too many references. They need to be pruned later to include only most relevant ones.
There are still various issues to be addressed in the rest of the article. I just moved the subsection "COVID-19 pandemic" to the section "History" but it contains way too many details and has to be properly woven into it. The history section also needs other changes: it contains too many details on certain topics (e.g. a full paragraph exclusively on Aztec education) and too few on others (e.g. education after the early modern period). The section "Formal" discusses the different levels of education according to ISCED 2011. It is very long and detailed: it includes a total of 6 subsections and 2 subsubsections. A lot of summarization is required to bring it down in size. And I mentioned earlier various problems with the section "Unconventional forms". I'll try to address these points one by one but this will take more time. Phlsph7 (talk) 07:55, 30 April 2023 (UTC)
Very nice work! If I may make a suggestion: the Many factors influence lead paragraph lists factors, but doesn't say which are most influential. Are there good-enough studies on this that would allow us to be more precise? DFlhb (talk) 12:12, 2 June 2023 (UTC)
Hello DFlhb and thanks for the feedback! That's a good question. Most of the books on education studies give an overview of the different factors but do not provide a quantitative comparison of their influence. I found something in the meta-analysis Karadağ 2017. I'm not sure that the lead is the best place for this since they acknowledge that the study has important limitations and it does not cover all the factors discussed in the article, such as gender and ethnicity. But their conclusion is interesting so I added a corresponding remark to the section "Factors of educational success". Phlsph7 (talk) 15:12, 2 June 2023 (UTC)
Thanks! And yes, until we have numerous studies with established findings, it's better to be cautious in the lead. DFlhb (talk) 07:58, 3 June 2023 (UTC)

After looking through the article, I haven't seen any reason to quickfail the article (having been told to ignore redlinks), so I'll get right into the review proper

Rate Attribute Review Comment
1. Well-written:
1a. the prose is clear, concise, and understandable to an appropriately broad audience; spelling and grammar are correct. The prose is clear and concise, and has correct SPaG through the article.
1b. it complies with the Manual of Style guidelines for lead sections, layout, words to watch, fiction, and list incorporation. Article follows MoS, its lead section is appropriately long and follows all other MoS guidelines.
2. Verifiable with no original research:
2a. it contains a list of all references (sources of information), presented in accordance with the layout style guideline. The article contains a references section which contains all of the article's citations as well as a general list of sources.
2b. reliable sources are cited inline. All content that could reasonably be challenged, except for plot summaries and that which summarizes cited content elsewhere in the article, must be cited no later than the end of the paragraph (or line if the content is not in prose). All inline citations are verifiable (all link to somewhere), and after having randomly checked them (article has 250+ citations), they are related to the topic and reliable
2c. it contains no original research. All claims about education are backed up inline
2d. it contains no copyright violations or plagiarism. After running it through the copyvio detector, that didn't find any plagiarism. After manually checking through the PDF sources etc, I did not find any plagiarism nor copyright violations.
3. Broad in its coverage:
3a. it addresses the main aspects of the topic. The article addresses the main aspects of the topic in an appropriate level of detail
3b. it stays focused on the topic without going into unnecessary detail (see summary style). The article stays focused on the main topic and specifics (such as country education, types of education, etc) are spun off into their own articles.
  4. Neutral: it represents viewpoints fairly and without editorial bias, giving due weight to each. The article uses NPOV through the article and does not give any one topic undue weight
  5. Stable: it does not change significantly from day to day because of an ongoing edit war or content dispute. The article is stable and does not dramatically change on a day to day basis
6. Illustrated, if possible, by media such as images, video, or audio:

Phlsph7, I have read the article and have a couple of suggestions

  • it would be helpful to link thick definitions to thick concept and if possible explain it for a lay person.
  • I am not sure that the sentence Additionally, the term may also refer to an academic field that studies the methods, processes, and social institutions involved in teaching and learning. is needed as there is already a section on Education studies.
  • Tertiary education is also referred to as higher education. It... should perhaps read Tertiary education includes higher education, which... as tertiary education also includes further and continuing education.

TSventon (talk) 22:37, 31 August 2023 (UTC)

Hello TSventon and thanks for the feedback. I added the link to thick concept. For reasons of comprehensiveness, it's probably better to make it explicit in the definition section that "education" can also refer to the academic field since some readers may not be aware of this. I clarified the relation between tertiary education and higher education since these terms are used slightly differently in different countries. Phlsph7 (talk) 07:34, 1 September 2023 (UTC)
Phlsph7, thank you for the response, I have also noticed a cite book reference with a |journal= ignored error message.

TSventon (talk) 09:23, 1 September 2023 (UTC)

The template "cite book" does not recognize the parameter "journal". I removed it. Phlsph7 (talk) 16:20, 1 September 2023 (UTC)

Learning styles

Learning styles are mentioned briefly in this article, ending with: "For efficient learning, it is often beneficial to include a wide variety of learning modalities." However, our own article on the subject shows that the concept is currently a matter of great debate and has faced criticism (the lead section should be enough reading). Just recommending that the part about learning styles shouldn't be so cut-and-dry, as this only shows the proponents' side of the debate. — VORTEX3427 (Talk!) 11:08, 11 September 2023 (UTC)

Hello Vortex3427 and thanks for pointing this out. I slightly modified the text to take these criticisms into account. There still seem to be a lot of supporters for the effects of learning styles in the academic literature and many overview works mention their effects. So given the limited space we have to discuss them, it might not be a good idea to dive too much into the critical side. Phlsph7 (talk) 12:07, 11 September 2023 (UTC)
That's fine. I was just worried that it was being depicted as a "for sure" thing. — VORTEX3427 (Talk!) 08:07, 12 September 2023 (UTC)
