Copyright donation edit
re:the copyright infringement problem. I work for County Executive Mangano, and the biography of him that was paraphrased was written by me. I'm perfectly alright with it being used here. What do I have to do to allow it's inclusion? The campaign website that it was posted on is not active (though I should be able to access it still). Please advise. Dead links to press releases edit
There are currently 17 dead links to press releases at the defunct website http://legislatoredmangano.com . It looks like these press releases may be preserved under the Nassau County Legislature website (for example, this one), but they're no longer linked from the main press release page. They are linked from the Internet Archive snapshot of the page here, bu the URLs don't match and it's going to be difficult to match the refs to the titles. Manhattan Institute for Policy Research edit
This article is full of data from the Manhattan Institute for Policy Research, and worse claims that it is "nonpartisan". Just read the Manhattan Institute for Policy Research on wikipedia! Someone is trying to use this page as a campaign promotion! --Gary123 (talk) 15:20, 4 February 2012 (UTC)
- I'm also astonished at how many of the sources are press releases from Mr. Mangano's own office. These are not third-party sources, and their reliability is suspect. - A helpful IP editor has added a bunch of balancing text with suitable references, and I have copyedited both the old and new material for neutrality and for whether the cited sources actually supported the text. - Non-press release sources have been used to fix any bad citations (the press release sources are still there as well). If someone wants to erase large sections of this article, like the previous user did, then they need to state why. - Thank you for adding the third-party citations. I have a few notes:
- Before the citations were added, you had reverted without discussion 44 edits made over the course of a month. I know we say to be bold, but making such a large reversion really requires prior discussion on the talk page. Most of these edits were the addition of properly sourced new material by the IP user 72.80.205.54, and myself both doing uncontroversial maintenance such as formatting references, and fact-checking all of the citations since I had noticed that many of them did not actually support the statements in the article. Because major changes were made after this revert, it will now take a lot of work to restore any of the old edits while maintaining the new edits.
- When you add sources, it would be helpful if you provided formatted citations including the article title, author, date, and so on. There is a tool in the editing window that makes it easy to do this; click "Cite" at the top of the editing window, and then click the "Templates" drop down box and select "Cite web" or "Cite news" as appropriate. This helps to avoid link rot by providing complete information in case the article itself changes its URL or goes offline, and also makes the source easily identifiable to readers. If this information is not provided, then other editors have to manually look it up and expand all the citations.
- Though strictly speaking it is not required, I would encourage you to register and create a username so that it is easier to discuss your contributions. Many IP addresses are shared and change periodically, and it is sometimes unclear who is making what edit. Registering also hides your IP address so it is actually more anonymous. See Wikipedia:Why create an account?
- Regarding the use of press releases, they can be used to support statements on the Mangano administration's views andvopinions, but they need to be qualified in the text with words like "According to Mangano..." or "The Mangano administration said that...". According to our core content policy on verifiability, "Articles should be based on reliable, third-party, published sources with a reputation for fact-checking and accuracy," and press releases are inherently first-party sources and specifically intended to promote the subject. I would generally say that press releases are unnecessary if the third-party source is available, and should not be used to make statements of fact in the absence of third-party sources, although they could be used sparingly to expand on Mangano's views and opinions as I just mentioned. - Thank you for adding the third-party citations. I have a few notes:
- I agree with Antony-22 above. User 12.148.224.88 and his supporters simply removed an enormous amount of properly sourced (from mainstream outlets such as Newsday, the New York Times, and various Long Island newspapers) and relevant (LI Bus controversy, police budget cuts, other budget cuts, proposed sewer sale, and tax scandal allegations). In fact, anything that is remotely negative or not overwhelmingly positive about Mangano was selectively removed. This is clearly POV editing. Meanwhile much positive and frankly fluffy information (much of it from Mangano's office's press releases) were added. Even now (as of 4/3/12) check out how many of these "sources" are http://nassaucounty.ny.gov/CountyExecutive/NewsRelease" sources? Even the URL's reveal that the sources are Mangano himself. Like Antony-22 said above, first-person press releases are not acceptable as sources (except to sparingly list Mangano's viewpoints).
- This constitutes one of the most clear POV editing examples I have ever seen on wikipedia and is absolutely not allowed. I agree entirely with Antony-22 above.

Mangano has implemented several regressive_tax initiatives including "$35.6 million in revenue" garnered "from increased real estate fees that" has added "hundreds or thousands of dollars to the cost of buying, selling or refinancing properties in the county." Red Light Camera ticketing was also foisted upon the tax payers. A CBS news story covered taxpayers in dismay regarding the proposed imposition of a $105 surcharge for said ticket, in that news report the term described "cries highway robbery. Alternately,and Mangano said "the fee would help pay for the police force to work overtime in policing public events, and would alleviate homeowners from potential tax increases." [12] Mangano, contrary to his representations, has increased the, already high taxes in Nassau County to egregious levels. 80 million dollars in additional fees have been placed into Mangano's latest budget. I found it unacceptably contentious and reverted accordingly; 96.250.174.99 chose not to discuss besides by copypasting their original text in the section above this one. This refusal resulted in their block and semi-protection for this page. This is the text in question:

I tried as hard as I could to maintain the spirit of what was left while making fixes regarding accuracy, coherence, continuity, and plain grammatical correctness. This is what I'm going to put in the article:
- Mangano has implemented several tax initiatives including "$35.6 million in revenue" garnered "from increased real estate fees that" have added "hundreds or thousands of dollars to the cost of buying, selling or refinancing properties in the county." A CBS news story about the proposed inclusion of a $105 surcharge for every issuance of a traffic or parking ticket in Nassau County quoted several county residents deriding potential fallout from such fees; in the same story, Mangano said that "the fee would help pay for the police force to work overtime in policing public events, and would alleviate homeowners from potential tax increases."
To me, all of it needs to go because it was obviously added by a partisan actor who probably has a stake in Nassau County taxes or in whether or not Mangano gets reelected next year. But since I might be biased myself, I agreed with EdJohnston's suggestion that I come here to see if the purple text there should be retained or if it all should be removed.
