The history of ecosystem-based management provides evidence that its creation has involved experts from several disciplines, which supports its tenet of interagency cooperation. It also helps to point out the flaws found in traditional systems of ecological management which in turn supports implementation of this management style.

The ecosystem-based management process should be included to provide a basic idea of what is involved and what key components or steps should at least be considered for approaching this form of environmental management. This process does not focus on either marine or terrestrial ecosystems and instead reveals that, regardless of the type of ecosystem being managed, a commonly perceived complex issue can still be achievable by breaking it down into simplified tasks. Following a step-by-step process or guideline can help in managing, restoring, and protecting whole ecosystems more efficiently. Common problems, obstacles and criticisms are also important to mention, as they can be used as examples to the types of problems that can be encountered with using ecosystem-based management.

Ecosystem-based management of marine environments is a very important contemporary issue and human activities are largely the cause of declines in ecosystem functioning. Information about the factors that are currently impacting marine ecosystems has therefore been included. This information is crucial to understanding why ecosystem-based management is so desperately needed in marine systems. We outlined the benefits of a holistic management approach for both marine ecosystems and the human communities utilizing their services and resources. While some key elements of ecosystem-based management were already outlined on the old page, there are other important key elements that were neglected. We have included other key elements that are of importance as well as expanding on the existing information. Firstly, we discussed the need for interactions between various sectors, which may have cumulative impacts on marine ecosystems. Secondly, we discussed how the changing of public perceptions is vital for effective management, as decision-making bodies require public support and awareness to implement management strategies. Finally, there is a great need for communication among different groups to enable the development of management strategies that bridge the gap between science and policy. While the previous page presented very useful information about key elements, only one source was cited in this section, whereas we have now presented information from a variety of sources.

Examples of situations where ecosystem-based management has been applied was provided to comprehend what is involved in the transition from a environmental management, why it is necessary and what are the main difficulties faced. In both examples provided, in the Great Bear Forest and in the Great Lakes, the authors described a lot of difficulties related to the transition, especially regarding social and economical aspects.
