Talk:East Timor at the 2004 Summer Olympics

2004 the first? edit

I'm reasonably sure that Timore-Leste sent a marathon runner (perhaps Gil da Cruz Trindade) to the 2000 Olympics in Sydney. This was when the country was still under a transitional UN administration and not long after the violent aftermath of the independence vote. I recall that the Timorese runner brought up the rear in the marathon, and was thus the last participant in the final event of the Olympics, and when he entered the stadium, he received a standing ovation from the crowd. Am I misremembering all this? --Jfruh 14:04, 16 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Ah ha, a little poking around reveals that Timorese athletes competed as "International Olympic Athletes" in 2000. I'll add a note. --Jfruh 14:07, 16 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
Yeah... and I don't think we have an article on Individual Olympic Athletes at the 2000 Summer Olympics (note individual rather than international), though we should. I'm making a note on Talk:2000 Summer Olympics about it. Might get to it later this week if no one else beats me to it. -- Jonel | Speak 03:01, 17 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
They only sent two marathon runners in 2004, as indicated in the results. I edited the first paragraph accordingly 134.106.22.83 11:06, 8 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
