Election as mayor edit

The Fairbanks city clerk's office published a history of city elections back around 1995. Unfortunately, my copy is not in front of me right now. According to that book, Fairbanks was originally known as the Town of Fairbanks. The name wasn't changed to the present City of Fairbanks until 1950. Also, and while this isn't 100% clear to me, it appears that the organic act of 1900 did not allow for popular election of mayors. This was the case until Congress passed new legislation either in 1916 or 1917. So, in the early years of Fairbanks, the mayor was chosen from amongst the council, just like is the case today with second-class cities in Alaska. The article's content doesn't directly contradict what I'm saying, but it may confuse matters somewhat as to why he became mayor under the circumstances presented.RadioKAOS (talk) 06:14, 15 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
