The first "Dunedin Symphony Orchestra" was a professional orchestra established in June 1932 and conducted by a Monsieur de Rose:

The orchestra went on to give several well-reviewed concerts that year, including a charity Christmas concert and a trip to Invercargill (which evidently lost money due to poor attendance):
