Talk:Dundee school shootings

More info edit

This article could do with various improvements, or perhaps to be supplemented with one on “Carstairs hospital escape”. The opening is technically inaccurate as Mone was convicted of one murder in each incident – "his pleas of not guilty to murdering the other two were accepted by the Crown" according to the Herald archive – probably because exact details weren’t necessary for a life sentence. There are various sources out there, but some details are unclear e.g. Hansard says they were captured at "roundabout 43" – the A74 never had many roundabouts, so I think this means J43 of the M6 for Carlisle, which is consistent with this gallantry citation[1]. The fact that this Mone’s father was also convicted of three separate murders after the incident is probably notable as well. Billwilson5060 (talk) 12:47, 9 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Death edit

To the IPs insisting he died in 1983, note that that was his father, Robert Christopher Mone. This is the son, Robert Francis Mone. Both were/are multiple murderers. If you read the article, it does actually say this. -- Necrothesp (talk) 14:39, 8 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

Male Nurse edit

@Necrothesp: I disagree with your reversion of my edit changing "male nurse" to "nurse" but I think your reasoning makes sense. I note that the gender of the other inmate and police officer mentioned nearby are not mentioned, only the nurse.

Would you accept a compromise that identifies the gender of everyone murdered? The new sentence would read: "In 1976, Mone broke out of Carstairs Hospital with fellow inmate (and purported lover)[5], Thomas McCulloch, murdering another male inmate and a male nurse in the process and also killing a male police officer." Naturally the other inmate was male; such institutions are single sex. And in 1976 it is also almost certain that the police officer would be male. I would actually prefer the individuals to be named, then we wouldn't need to specify gender at all. -- Necrothesp (talk) 23:45, 29 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

Longest serving prisoner edit

I'm a bit stuck with this claim and it is surprisingly difficult to get solid information on. Any thoughts? John (talk) 19:30, 24 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

On reflection, I think it can be justified, when you consider the 23 January 1968 as the start of his sentence. John (talk) 19:52, 24 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
And does that make him the current longest-incarcerated prisoner in the entire UK? John (talk) 22:32, 24 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

AfD Discussion re: Marion Young edit

There's a discussion happening at Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Marion_Young that could impact this page. She's one of the victims, and currently has her own article that's been proposed for deletion. Per WP:CRIME it should take exceptional facts for a single-event perpetrator or victim to have an independent page. Thus, one suggestion is to merge the pages and then (my suggestion) to rename this article to something like Dundee School Shooting. Oblivy (talk) 13:36, 13 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

Revise and Move edit

Based on the discussion at AfD for Marion Young, it appears there is consensus to change this article into one about the event, rather than a series of articles about the victims and perpetrator. There was no event page for the school shooting.

Concerns included notability for one event for Young, and the same would apply to Hanson. An argument could be made for WP:1E for Mone as well -- although his history does include an escape it appears this doesn't appear to be the source of continued notoriety; he's famous for the St. John's shootings and not his behavior after incarceration even if it was impactful in its time.

If there is a concern about this move, I hope we can discuss it here and work on trying to improve the article as revised. I'm trying to reflect the views raised at the AfD, and achieve a balanced outcome that ensures the victims obtain balanced coverage in Wikipedia. At the same time I have preserved (I think) every bit of information which relates to Mone's bio. Oblivy (talk) 02:05, 30 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
