Why does this article exist?

why is this US Drought separated out of other ones for the Wikipedia "Droughts in the United States"-shouldn't they be together? Undercovergals (talk) 06:20, 15 July 2008 (UTC)

Clarify your question, please. I don't have the slightest idea what you're asking here. If your main question is just "why does this exist," see Drought in India Droughts and famines in Russia and the USSR Drought in Australia, which also deal with general trends and the impact of multiple events. Cleanup suggestions

• 1: Keep the content here until it's lengthy enough to warrant splitting off sections. Waiting until around the 33K mark is generally a good way to handle it. See WP:SPLIT. Would advise against splitting off the '88 section until the article's matured and grown some.
• 2: Might consider moving this to Drought in North America - Much of the text right now could be axed without losing a drop of substantive content. After doing so you'd have room to deal with the entire continent and to stop giving short shrift to the impact of the droughts of 33 and 88 on Canadian citizens and to discuss droughts that affected both the southwest and Mexico, using a more professional regionalistic approach. Rain patterns don't respect borders - Might as well write accordingly. MrZaius^talk 10:30, 18 July 2008 (UTC)

Yes, the current drought in CA would be well worth mentioning. Media have done a pretty good job of documenting impacts, including people going hungry, which may or may not ever show up in economic loss tallies.Mercury34 (talk) 15:13, 27 February 2009 (UTC)

Article Rewriting

Because it's sloppily written and lacks focus. Again: Stick to the facts and shoot for a more condensed, on-topic, encyclopedic flavor. Steer clear of overly grand adjectives. As pointed out in the cleanup tags, the piece currently falls prey to serious unencyclopedic-tone issues and, in sections, howto-like language directly addressing the reader and calling for action rather than covering reliably sourced third party recommendations. Consider all English-speakers with an Internet connection as your audience, not policy makers or voters within a single nation. See the manual of style or any number of the Wikipedia:Featured Articles or extremely information-dense United States article for examples of the writing that is most likely to result in an FA-grade article.

Beyond the basic writing and stylistic problems, the piece would also benefit from a broadened or tightened scope, barring a switch away from a discussion of meteorological phenomena to a discussion of uniquely American policy trends. While it is a bit of a stretch to say that the entire United States is consistent enough throughout to warrant special consideration for a meteorological piece, it is no more of a stretch to say that the entire Northern Hemisphere could. For instance, it would be beneficial to discuss recurring events tied to the El Nino oscillation et al in a manner that allows for coverage of its impact not just on the American Southwest, but also Mexico. This too would seem to require a rewrite or something very near it in scope, but is a lower priority than just cleaning up the prose.

Wikification and clean up

The article finally has a lead, increased content, and a coherent flow. Since the main contributors were a University class via IP addresses, and at least two editors and two of their sock puppets have been banned from wikipedia, there has been no coordination on this matter with the other major editors because it wasn't possible. Texas Drought of 2011

why isn't the 2011 Texas Drought mentioned anywhere, it's one of the worse droughts in the State of Texas since the 1950s or the Dust Bowl of the 1930s. most of the state is in the worse category of Drought which is Exceptional. plus to make matters worse, this drought is possibly fueling the 2011 Untied States heat wave.--Boutitbenza 69 9 (talk) 20:39, 28 July 2011 (UTC)

Thanks, I thought that might be the case. I look forward to seeing the result. I got interested in the notion of "worst" and a bit of research turned up a source from which I have drafted a possible addition.

The US suffered about $150 billion in damages plus a 0.5-1% drop in GDP related to drought in 2012. In addition, the drought is expected to increase US food prices by about 4% in 2013.

What do you think of this source? Does that look RS to you?

At first, the source seemed sketchy, but pursuing things further seems to indicate something solid. Sure, I would add some information from that. As for my own edits, I was thinking of going on adding things but I'm a bit distracted now from non-Wikipedia-related stuff. I might be off for a while. California drought

So when is California's big drought gonna get a mention if not its own page? They haven't gotten enough rain there for what, three straight years? Blue square across text

For some unknown reason, these blue square areas began showing and I cannot get that square to go away. I was citing references saying that the drought extended across 1990 for some areas, and this blue square popped in. Can someone help me? Angela Kate Maureen (talk) 06:52, 6 January 2022 (UTC)
