Castle or Palace edit

It isn't accurate to call this building a "castle" since castles serve a predominately defensive purpose, whereas this structure was used purely as a residence. The correct translation would be "Dresden Palace" or the official title of "Dresden Royal Palace". Dross2 12:52, 22 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

This isn't quite true: there are many examples in English of non-defensible castles. Castle Howard is a famous one. English usage of castle, palace and house is highly random.--Hegertor 22:48, 11 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
That may be so, but if the owners of the building have decided that the English-language name is "Dresden Royal Palace", who are we to change it to "Dresden Castle"? Dross2 13:20, 29 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
Dross2, that is an argument, but a fallacious one since the "owners" of the building are not native English speakers and hence not as qualified to judge what name is appropriate. I'm serious: if you called all German institutions by the English names that their German caretakers give them, you'd drag the quality of Wikipedia downhill fast.—Wegesrand (talk) 12:02, 3 November 2012 (UTC)Reply
Just so everyone is clear, the official German title for this castle is Residenzschloss, the translation of which is apparently (see above) debated. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.170.217.239 (talk) 03:09, 22 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
This will be renamed "Dresden Royal Palace" soon. Cheers, Horst-schlaemma (talk) 14:25, 13 September 2016 (UTC)Reply
Please be careful -- we had this before: an "alpha user" comes across and changes something of importance without thinking about the consequences, and all links, references etc. are then broken. "Dresden Castle" has been used in literature, guide information etc. widely, all signs in Dresden use this name as well. A name change would have to implemented through all WP articles that refer to "Dresden Castle".--Linear77 (talk) 07:31, 14 September 2016 (UTC)Reply
That's not an issue really, Linear77. A bot can auto-change all links/names. Cheers, Horst-schlaemma (talk) 21:36, 14 September 2016 (UTC)Reply
In theory, yes. But in reality, I took me many hours fixing naming issues after such previous "let's rename it" actions. And since I spent considerable time on this article and the related/linked buildings and places, I am fearing the worst...--Linear77 (talk) 09:45, 15 September 2016 (UTC)Reply
There aren't so many links at all. Cheers, Horst-schlaemma (talk) 17:31, 15 September 2016 (UTC)Reply
I am more worried about the 1,417 references to the name, and this is in the English WP alone. Who fixes/adjusts them?--Linear77 (talk) 08:04, 17 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

Please can you change the neo-renaissance to renaissance, because this residence ore castle is too old for the neo. See it at the german Wikipedia also. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Thomas Reichstein (talkcontribs) 22:22, 27 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

Use of flag icons in infobox edit

According to MOS:INFOBOXFLAG, flag icons may not be useful in infoboxes:

  • Generally, flag icons should not be used in infoboxes, even when there is a "country", "nationality" or equivalent field: they are unnecessarily distracting and give undue prominence to one field among many.

Therefore, I propose that the flag icon in the infobox be removed. -- Blairall (talk) 14:28, 20 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
